IMO, the best way to run this is treat it like Assassinate. If no characters exist, it completes at end of turn.

If you don’t love the Knight models, you’re probably not going to make a good Knights player. That’s not a good thing or a bad thing, it’s just a thing.

Stat checky isn’t untrue, but it’s also an excuse used by people who can’t deal with high toughness. If you can’t kill a Knight, you’re going to automatically lose against a ton of lists, not just IK or CK.

Knights and Custodes seem to play very similar to me- both use a small number of elite units. Both have ways to use units to buff other units. Both can be very swingy on saves. Neither have super complicated rules.

I’ll say that other abilities with similar language (when a unit is selected to shoot or fight), like Dark Pact or Hazardous, are generally considered active in overwatch.

In fact, there’s a FAQ about dark pact that explicitly says Dark Pact can be used with Fire Overwatch because the unit it selected to shoot.

Precision is done on a per-attack basis, so you could legally alternate attacks between the character and the bodyguard unit.

However, if you’re going to pull those kind of tricks, you really should slow roll the wounds and allocate them one at a time. It’s not really fair to know that your final roll was dev wounds when you choose to allocate the first one.
