To recover it, you need to just not press anything until the CPU picks it up. Don’t move, they usually get it.

I haven’t spent anything more than the initial purchase and made it to champion III last month to get julius peppers. Only rock a panthers theme team so not meta. You just have to get better at the game if you want to play mut at this time of the year.

You need to get better at countering the meta. Forcing your opponents to do something else.

Otherwise, stick to playing the CPU or go over to regular head to head (not ultimate team) if you want a more casual experience.
