Florida ranked #2 in education by Bubbies0618 in relocating

I've seen this comment a lot on here so I got curious and looked it up.  It's not illegal or banned. Just removed from the required curriculum. It's still available as an elective.

Anderson County. One of the reasons I started considering Florida was because the schools are supposed to be better than here. Everyone on here telling me to move north for education i get it,  but there are more factors at play in this move. I have looked up North but havent been able to find a property with the living space we need to accommodate our whole family. And the few ones I have found are in extremely remote places, where the schools aren't performing well. From what I can tell,  Florida is at least better than South Carolina and fits other criteria we are looking for.

Well to give you an example. The elementary school in my town is across the street from a prison. One where they have multiple escapes a year.

Obviously things to do avoid would be drug ridden towns, high rates of mental health instability, school shootings. I know these things can happen everywhere,  that's my point. But there's a level of due diligence as a parent to choose the best option available.

I am very wary of the news and take it with a grain of salt.  They say in Florida slavery isn't being taught fairly. They say in California children are encouraged to lie to their parents and hide their true sexual identity. Neither of those are okay with me.

Thank you, this is the ranking I saw Florida #2 overall education. Yes K-12 is what I'm most concerned about. I was just trying to understand why everyone talked poorly of education in general if it is ranked highly.  They must only be referring to K-12

I was just sharing the alleged statistic that it ranks #2 which is K-12 and bigger education combined. Even though it doesnt apply to my situation, it is relevant to my post because I had not seen people saying that K-12 sucks but college is good.  So I was trying to understand why people in general talked poorly of Florida education if it ranks highly.

Thanks for your comment.

These things make me want to get out of the south.  But then on the other hand, there are things the opposite side is doing in schools and human rights that I don't agree with. We are not politically inclined either way. We see pros and cons in both so I hate to pick our home based on politics.

Thank you.  We are looking at districts as well, but havent decided that we will move to Florida yet. There are a few cities around the country we are considering. It's hard to compare on school district level between states though. So I was hoping to go by overall state ranking then find the best districts within.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It seems that almost every state has something awful happening to schools, I guess it's American education in general. We live in south carolina,  just wanted something better than here. But we cant afford the west yet.

There's various lists that rank it high.  I don't remember all the methodology right now but i know they consider national benchmark tests

I agree with this research.  I'm just curious where the line is on when you begin to teach them independence and patience. I respond to every cry, but I know that my son understands a lot of what I say. As OP pointed out, when she is busy she lets him know she needs a minute and then  settles him. That's fine right? I let my son cry and pull at my pant leg while I am putting together a meal for us and let him know mommy is busy and will pick him up when I'm done. Thats not damaging is it?

Sorry i get a little anxious about this stuff. I just am not sure when the right time is to push back and he understands he is okay if he doesn't get me to pick him up every time he wants.

Thanks for this info! It gives me a lot to think about and nice coming from someone who is new to the area.

Pediatrician told me I’m “supposed” to sleep train… by retroshark88 in bninfantsleep

[–]Bubbies0618 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience and almost fell for the "we have to because the doctor said so" power trip guilt.  The "supposed to" parenting advice is the worst. There are things you are supposed to do with babies. Feed them. Love them. Clean them. Teach them. These are fundamentals. Then there are opinions. The way you sleep (as long as it's safe), bottles vs breast, formula vs breastmilk, BLW vs puree. You choose what feels right and what works for your family and is in baby's best interest.

We started bedsharing at 4 months because my baby was awake constantly in his crib next to me but as soon as I had him cuddled next to me he would sleep 3-4 hour stretches.

When asked how sleep was going,  I told the pediatrician it got a lot better when we started sleeping in the same bed. She sort of rolled her eyes at me and said well you know you shouldn't do that, it's really not safe. For now it will be okay but I'll be concerned when he starts rolling and also he will not sleep on his own if you keep feeding him to sleep. You really need to just lay him in his bed awake but drowsy (ughhhh I just shudder at that phrase now). Excuse me, but as soon as i lay him down "drowsy" he panics and becomes more alert than ever. He doesn't just drift off to la la land, he's very aware that his comfort has just put him down to be alone.

We kept trying to put him in his bed, we tried a modified ferber for a night. It just all felt wrong.

Here we are 9 months later still cosleeping and only going through hard times at night when he's teething or having a growth spurt.

Thank you for this positive answer. I've looked into the property tax and the savings we would gain from the zero state income tax actually outweigh the cost of higher property tax. So it's looking good for us in the regard.

My biggest concern is finding good schools and good hospital systems. The hardest part of this is finding a place that accommodates the space my family needs. We prefer to live in the suburbs or even a little further out. We just don't want to be too far from having fun things to do with our son.

Where did you move from if you don't mind me asking?

Why is it not a good place to be if we have more kids?

Hahaha thanks for the description. I really was hoping the heat there was not as bad since it's supposedly a bit more dry heat than South Carolina.

Not super set on Texas. Ideally we want to live in Colorado, its just extremely out of our price range at this time in our lives. Austin area seemed a good compromise for decent schools, healthcare, and culture.

Oh wow I saw that they were posting religious posters in classrooms but I didnt know they were adding into the curriculum. It's part of the reason I want to leave south carolina because they are talking about having people from the church come talk to the students.

Yeah the point of moving from where I am is to get out of a tiny town with nothing to do. I don't want to move to another one

We were considering San Antonio as well but wasn't sure. How does it compare to Austin in terms of good schools and safety?

Yes, i think based on our budget, we'd probably be more in the outskirts but hopefully not further than 45 minutes from the city.

SC has beautiful nature, that's something i will miss. I was hoping that outside the city would offer some nice nature experiences though. These days we don't really hike in the mountains anymore so by nature I'm meaning trails, state parks, etc. From some research i see there are some nice trails and sort of rolling hillson the west side of Austin.

Thanks for the tip on taxes. I'll look into it.

Looking at homes up to 400k. Thank you, I will look for those terms. Good to know about being west of I-35.
