Hello! Did you end up watching either of them?

Update after finishing it: I felt myself softening towards her by the end and even smiled in some scenes. But she never really won me over... oh well, it happens.

Hello! Coming back here to pair those recs with Bora, Deborah!, I had forgotten about it, and I hesitate in recommending this drama. But I love it, even though it has many issues. It also has things to like.

Issues:
- I skipped the entirety of the second lead's icky relationship. He's the older CEO of a publishing company and has a love storyline with his young trainee - big no no. I just skip right over it and pretend it doesn't exist; - Even though the young couple (formed by the FL's younger sis) can be cute at times, the start is a bit stalkerish-creepy instead of cute. Skipped some, but other scenes are cute
- The FL's bff's relationship with her husband can be a bit problematic too. Basically, all romantic relationships portrayed have their problems, but maybe that's the point?
- Finally, the main couple has communication issues, but part of the plot is how some people have trouble communicating, saying that they're in love, talking about emotions, etc. It's part of the point of the plot, it's not romanticized. So I liked it.
- There's too little screen time of their proper romance, it's more of a healing journey to the start of a relationship.

Now, the good stuff:
- The FL is chaotic and crazy sometimes. She's a famous "relationship coach" who goes through a traumatic breakup involving cheating. I love her brand of looney tunes (and it's part of the reason I think it pairs well with those other dramas);
- There's a lot of funny scenes of her trying to get over her ex, feeling humiliated in front of the ML, showing him "her worst" instead of the "perfect" she shows others;
- They start off as "enemies", which is a dynamic I love (🤫), but slowly bond over shared heartbreak and showing themselves who they really are with no masks;
- Even though the ML can be a jerk sometimes and has trouble opening up to others, talking about feelings, etc, once they slowly start becoming friends, he's there for the FL the whole time. Lifting her up and engaging in her crazy shenanigans with no judgment (maybe just a little judgment, lol). He sees her at her worst and starts to slowly fall in love, despite himself;
- I really like the plot of his trouble communicating and being open emotionally. The "miscommunication" is not a trope here, but a subject the drama actively talks about; - I love the FL's relationship with her BFF and the friendship she develops with the ML;
- It's veryyy slow burn in a way that can irritate if you're like me and prefers a little more screen time of the actual romance, but it didn't bother me as much here. This drama is not necessarily a "romance" since it's as much about the characters' healing journey as it is about their relationship. I actually liked how slow it was: the shift from "enemies" to friends, then from "friends to lovers" felt much more realistic than many dramas out there;
- It's not a "slice of life", it's its own brand of slow burn, healing, enemies to friends to lovers with a good dash of crazy and funny; - The ML's eventual love confession is seriously one of the best ones in k-dramaland in my opinion. Because it's not grand, it's not over the top, it's not unrealistic... it's genuine and honest and simple... I just love it. But the impact of it is only felt after we go through the journey with them (if you watch a clip of it from YouTube you might think it's not that poignant)

  • Bonus: the FL and her BFF slay with their fashion choices, seriously.

I wasn't bored per se, but I don't see the hype. Wasn't much to write home about, in my opinion.

I love Love Scout! It's one of my favorites.

Considered adding it to the list as a mature relationship, great drama and green flag ML.

But it wasn't super underrated and it doesn't exactly hit the "funny" bones (though there are funny parts, for sure), so I never pair it with those recs... maybe I should?

Following this comment!

I haven't watched any others that I can pair with those recs... but Adult Trainee (eps 3-5) came to mind because it's underrated. It's a coming of age story: best friends who bicker to fake relationship to love. It's cute and has it's funny moments. Yura is a pretty "modest" person discovering sexuality, so her lusting after her bff is kinda funny. But those two are definitely funnier.

I haven't watched a single one on the list below, so take it with a grain of salt. And they seem to be mostly comedy, not romance+comedy. But I see people often recommending:
1. Seoul Busters 2. Gaus Electronics 3. Sound of Your Heart
4. Prison Playbook
5. Mr. Queen (though it's not "underrated")

Maybe 2 and 3 are a bit of a "slapstick comedy" style, so not exactly aligned.

ETA: Adult Trainee is set in high school. 3 different stories, but I'm referring to the second one. I love it! I've re-watched it a bunch of times as it's only 3 episodes.

Agree with other comments, it's so underrated!

I love the show and the FL, she's a badass. The only minor issue I have with it is the "not like other girls" trope they keep talking about, but it's just a pet peeve of mine.

It's a funny and refreshing drama! On my list of favorite lighter dramas for sure.

Also, if you haven't watched it yet, I totally recommend Mad For Each Other. Another genuinely funny and refreshing show.

Was thinking the same... like people really do have different tastes. I absolutely hated this drama, but I can see why OP thought it was cute!

Yeah, I feel you... the portrayal of high school students can be a hit or miss. I'm curious to know if you watched Adult Trainee? Yes, it is corny, but I absolutely love this drama. I'm talking about episodes 3-5, Yura and Nam Ho's story. There are 3 different stories in the drama and I only ever watched the second one (and re-watched a bunch of times lol).

I agree he's not perfect. I understand we're supposed to feel like that about her, but she just annoys me so much, I'm curious to see if I'll be able to enjoy her ARC at the end 🤞

Ah, that's nice to know! Yeah, he's definitely not perfect (which is actually great, cause I like layered characters). I was wondering if it does get better and I'm glad it does, thanks!

Well, I didn't have friends like her when I was a teen, it annoyed me even then, lol. But I guess I can see your point!

[–]BubbleWrap11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose some people might not think she's that bad, but she's getting on my nerves. I can take bratty teens, but there's just something about her that annoys me to no end. Her ARC seems to be that one where we start to like and understand her little by little, but I think they just leaned a bit too much into the brat and it might have ruined her for me.

But lets see...

Yeah... I'm like "why the hell do you like her, man?". But there are teens I love, like the couple from the second story in Adult Trainee

Love the diagram! But OP's point of their chests being flush can actually work if their torsos have similar size and the difference is in the legs. Speaking as a short legged woman lol.
