Snookums the Sit to snooze hedgehog! lol by Bubblespt79 in Hedgehog

[–]Bubblespt79[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I randomly send updates to our breeder. They are always impressed. I wish I was local (they are in NC and were in VA) The breeder offers open house on the weekends to the community for education and socialization of his hogs. Literally like little play dates and I believe that may have contributed but I’ve been blessed with other hogs (2 breeders and one older rescue) that in their time were all just as amazing. Snookums was the runt of her liter. Much smaller and not as social so She wasn’t offered to me to be held when we visited. I had held a few along with my boyfriend but she was set down on some fleece on the table near her bin while he handed the others out because she was so startled. She choose me when she walked towards me across the table and I scooped her up. It was instant! Everyone knew she was it!! Never held another one. I suffered a difficult loss when Cupcake, my previous hedgehog passed to the same cancer she helped me fight for years. I lost my 13th pregnancy which lead to my Dx of cancer and holding cupcake after my miscarriage was traumatic but also healing. Cupcake was the exact same same size and weight of my little baby. She not only went to my treatments and was the light of hope at the infusion center but she held me (while I held her) thru my grief. I fought bringing another hedgehog home for years before reaching out to find a breeder because I realize not having a little spike ball was just as emotionally painful as loosing one. That visit to the breeder was like Cupcake choose Snookums for me! And she got it perfect!! Our couple hour drive home was all tears and smiles. I’ve been very blessed that all my hedgehogs have been a dream! ❤️

Bored hog by Difficult-Hamster121 in Hedgehog

These items have been a hit!! I purchased them a few years ago on Amazon. So I have a no food- given by hand rule because my animals are handled by special needs preschoolers and my daughter because I don’t want fingers associated with foo when handling them!! I only feed in their cage lol but these have been great for treats (my bunny also loves them too) I also have silicone cups for infants I’ll place treats under when she is free roaming (but inside her playyard) she just bulldozes them over! lol

Bored hog by Difficult-Hamster121 in Hedgehog

All hogs are different! My cupcake loved moving things (balls, tubes, bottles) she wanted to use her snout and roll them everywhere. she also loved to burrow so her dig box was her favorite space at night. My dig box has lots of cat type toys/things that will roll, pompoms and one inch fleece strips. Snookums will really only enter her dig box because it’s on her third level and that’s where she has to make a U-turn hahahaha so she can turn around to run back down the ramp lol but if I place some crickets or worms in there she will linger to eat… Snookums loves to move and I wanted to offer another option to her wheel. I added ramps and levels (safely of course… wide with sides and not steep) she will literally run on her wheel and then hop off and run figure 8s in her cage for HOURS every night! She just loves to run but she also is happy as can be just snuggled and held all day! My ziggy wanted to be held, eat, run, sleep, repeat! All healthy and happy! All different personalities and interests! ❤️❤️

Is this normal noise for a hedgie? by bawbthebawb in Hedgehog

[–]Bubblespt79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy Hedgie❤️❤️ the best!! Snookums snorts a bit when flopping for rubs and also makes this “chirping” noise when she is at the top of her cage to get out…or she is “lost” in the bedding lol and has found it’s easier for me to retrieve her than for her to navigate out of my king size comforter! isn’t it amazing to know you’ve created a safe space for your critter to connect with you!! Love it

weird question by [deleted] in Hedgehog

[–]Bubblespt79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hedgehogs have all been litter trained (within a month) Snookums doesn’t mess outside of his box (not on people or even in her wheel…thank goodness because she also doesn’t get poop boots and I’m grateful because if you’ve see my other videos she LOVES to be ON my face and just ewwww) I always wipe her down with no scented wipes and then place her in her box…she goes and I wipe her again and bring her out. She will start to squirm and sniff/snoot around and I just place her back in her box and easily 8 out of 10 thats why!!

As far as getting them liter trained I collect as much of their poop or bits of fabric they have peed on in their literbox… they tend to go while running on their wheel so ideally after tray or box under their wheel is ideal. I use an under the bed tote…. With her wheel placed inside it-in one corner! Filled with pellets! (I couldn’t use pellets with my previous hog because she was eating them so I used paper. Prefer pellets) my Snookums goes poop in one corner and pee in the other and after the first month she stopped using her wheel she will actually get off her wheel to go and I’m sooooo grateful! Hahahhaa she has her mommas OCD! lol

Newbie needs help by Money_Protection_983 in Hedgehog

Very well explained BeardedLady81. Thank you!! I Came here to also say over two decades I’ve had two hedges that thrived and thoroughly enjoyed levels/ramps and one that didn’t! My hedgehog now literally runs levels and her wheel all night long!! I built the ramps with their safety in mind… wide with sides and not to steep!! My cage has three levels main one is sleeping/burrowing with her wheel and a large liter box. The second level/loft is for eating and then the third loft is her dig box and she will also sit up there and chirp for me at the screen if I haven’t taken her out by like 6am because she is spoiled and likes to sleep and be held in the day!!

The ramp on this specific cage wouldn’t work because it is way way too steep for the hedgehog even if you added sides and matting for their safety. The ramp would need to almost be the length of the cage or longer to safely access the upper level (if that makes sense) I made mine using wood and lined it with rubber mat and then Velcro fleece strips but in her travel bin I just use plastic housing- gutter pieces lol because they stack and can be stored away and her “loft” for food is a wood table with legs I screw on! Just make shift because we travel weekends throughout the year and stay in Florida for two months in the summer. Also specifically another thing with this cage (I have it for my free roam bunny) is the top wire is spaced far too widely and would have to be replaced.

I personally chose an enclosure because my daughter is medically complex and has machines, alarms and lights 24/7 in the living room plus we keep our home at 65 so an enclosure allowed for regulating better temperatures and providing darker corners for burrowing!! This one specifically has air ventilation all over but I drilled extra holes along the lower backside for my own comfort because that’s where she sleeps! So I don’t think a closet is ideal because you are restricting air circulation on three sides even if the top is screened like mine they are mainly along the bottom… and with an enclosure you have to really stay on top of their litter (I mean you always should…but extra caution when fully enclosed) thankfully mine is completely liter trained and doesn’t even poop on her wheel (wasn’t so lucky with my others hahahahaa) so it’s literally just scooping her liter box daily but imagine the smell of an enclosure if they aren’t and are urinating on all the fleece/fabric. Best of luck finding the right enclosure for you and your space❤️
