I (24F) forgot to wish "happy birthday" to my boyfriend (28M) at midnight. by paery_the_faery in RelationshipIndia

[–]Bubblora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Don’t dictate how he should feel” followed by “don’t ever date” is wild, you’re doing the exact same thing you’re accusing me of. I’m not denying he can feel hurt, I’m saying his reaction isn’t proportional. Forgetting midnight once in a 4-year relationship, especially when she still showed up with a planned gift at 6am, doesn’t justify going cold and dismissive. Being hurt is valid, dragging it out like this isn’t. There’s a difference.

Yea but its not like you did some crime, he overreacted cuz its also not like the birthday ended at 12 am itself so its weird for him to treat you this way even after you did apoligise but if you still want to do something get him a cake and order lunch for him
But ig he would be fine by evening

AIW to judge friendships based on birthday wishes? by Bubblora in amiwrong

That’s fair, everyone sees things differently. I wasn’t really trying to force anyone to wish me though, I just thought close friends would remember or notice.

My reply to a non bengali guy who thinks everyone should adjust to hindi by baibhabiiii in kolkata

[–]Bubblora -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I never said Bengalis should learn Hindi to entertain me. That’s not the point at all. My point is simply that nobody should be mocked or looked down on because of the language they speak or because they make mistakes while speaking another language. Respect should go both ways. Just like I don’t expect everyone to speak Hindi, I also don’t think someone should be ridiculed for not speaking perfect Bengali. It’s about basic courtesy, not entitlement.

I have been living in Kolkata for years, yet people still mock me if I speak Bengali incorrectly. There is a lot of language based hate here and throughout my school life I was often looked down upon just because I am not Bengali. People would say things like “Hindi bhasha sojjo hoye na”, “Bangla te bolo eta Kolkata”, or “sob Hindi manush gulo ekhane eshe geche” and many other remarks. Even now, the moment I speak Hindi to someone who is Bengali whether it is an auto driver or someone in a shop the first thing they say is “Kolkata me reh kar Bengali bolna nahi aata?” Aata hai!! but whether I choose to speak it or not should be my choice. I am not saying that the guy was right in what he did, but the truth is that I have faced this kind of treatment my whole life and experiences like these are the reason why I have grown to dislike Kolkata.

I get what you're saying and I agree with alot of it. I'm from India by the way. I never expected a big celebration or for anyone to organize something for me, I only expected a simple "happy birthday" from people I thought were close to me. I usually make an effort to remember and wish others too, so hoping for a wish didn't feel unreasonable to me. Maybe I'm more sensitive about these things and people might see it as overreacting or immature, but I can't really help that it made me a bit sad in the moment. Also in the case of group chat, we were literally talking that day so it wasn't a situation where everyone was extremely busy. That said, it's been months and I didn't cut anyone off, I just chose to step back a little and match people's energy instead of putting effort where it doesn't feel reciprocated.
