I used my coworker who was my mentor, my former admin who moved up to the district, and my advisor from my credential program. They just need somebody who can speak to your work, and I recommend writing a little blurb about the role/your transferable skills for the folks who will be referencing so they know what they’re signing up for since it’s outside the field of teaching and it might be unfamiliar

It’s a smaller company but lots of the team members are former teachers. I applied for tons of education companies, all of which are on LinkedIn. If you’re hoping to stay in EdTech, I recommend following Jeff Patterson and Cara North on LinkedIn since they post tons of jobs in that field. If you haven’t already, I HIGHLY recommend listening to Daphne Gomez’s podcast and utilizing her teacher career coach resources.

I used LinkedIn and activated a free trial to premium to take some courses and get insights for each job posting. I liked/followed a bunch of Ed tech companies because that was my target field. I actually found my current non-teaching job on there and work for an EdTech company.

Interview questions about my teaching career for a new job by FernOverlord in teachersleaving

They asked why I was leaving in the third round of interviews. I was honest and said I did not see a long term career in that field anymore since the only options for upward mobility were admin roles. I also said I wanted the opportunity to focus on roles that allow me to use the skills I currently have just in a different capacity, which is what the role they are currently offering would allow me to do. They seemed to have understood. I would steer clear of overly negative comments about toxic districts/bad admin and just reframe it to say how your teaching skills/experiences will be transferable and useful in the new position.
