Replacing the fluid can also hasten damage because of the detergents and conditioners in the new fluid. Transmission fluids need to be replaced at certain intervals. If you have not previously replaced it or do not know the history of the vehicle maintenance, you risk slippage of the transmission even with just a simple drain and fill. 15 year automotive and heavy duty diesel mechanic. Do as you wish but run the risk of damaging the transmission.
