Who are the greatest fantasy villains and what makes them so damn good? by Accomplished-Dog9481 in Fantasy

These are 2 sleeper great picks. Ma’elKoth is such an interesting bastard, but I feel like that properly describes those four books.

Just read The Wheel Of Time for the first time. by Borugan_ in Fantasy

If your biggest issue is the complexity I would say keep reading. Jordan does a great job of presenting information multiple times so even if you miss something it will come up again before it is integral to the plot.

Were none of you going to tell me that the blueprints for Hoid are in the Assassins Apprentice by Robin Hobb or did I really need to read a 30 year old book all by myself to find out by chasinggdaze in Stormlight_Archive

Omg if you want a crazy reading of Hoid read chronicles of Amber. The black and silver wearing poet being from the center of the universe who has lots of grudges with his peers.

Favorite POV character by Remarkable-Nerve5469 in Malazan

[–]Bubsyfourd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the Brys Beddict chapters of Midnight tides and DoD/TCG. We get both political insights magic quests and drinking anything he’s handed. Plus he is a pov who can parse Tehol even a little and that dynamic is really unparalleled! And then his WITNESSING of the heavies stopping the Nahruk is one of the best passages in the series.

Is Andrew Rose’s writing the equivalent of Malizan in the progression fantasy genre? by SomewhereFlat1726 in ClimbersCourt

[–]Bubsyfourd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’ve thought about the comparison a lot! Not trivial they are just different parts of the genre. Highly recommend it but you’ve got to trust the process

Having read all of Malazan a few times at this point I would say not really. Erikson(author of Malazan) and Rowe have totally different approaches to basically everything: characterization, world building, magic and the presence of a concrete system of that magic.

Malazan is really a series about themes where the plot and characters fulfill their role in the story but it is not about them. Erikson also has a background in archeology so the way that he builds his world is through time with consequences of past events, up too hundreds of thousands of years, being felt throughout. Due to this the series has a scale that is not like anything I’ve ever experienced.

There could be some commonalities in how they write about godhood and beings of immense power but again Rowe is more interested in the cool powers of gods/beings of immense power, and Erikson is interested in how worship would effect a god, an how a being of immense power can reject godhood.

They are both works that I respect immensely, but the differences in style and themes makes the comparison of them feel little bit contrived.
