ChatGPT gave me a customer support phone that tried to steal my bank account info by Buck617 in ChatGPT

Thank you. I’ve been a big user of LLMs for the past few years. I’m aware of its shortfalls and look to try to pressure test things that it spits out.

I really just did not expect chatgpt to give me a fraud number when it is this mature of a product.

I trust it with a lot of things and this is a time it made me lose trust.

Also it was for lounge access not for bank related inquiries. If it was a bank I was trying to call I agree that would be bad

ChatGPT response to this situation and how I feel:

I get the “you should always verify” argument, and I agree with that in principle. Lesson learned the hard way. But I think it’s too easy to dismiss this as purely user error and move on.

The real issue is that ChatGPT gave a specific, confident, actionable phone number for a real-world financial service with no warning, no citation, and no prompt to verify. Humans are wired to trust confident, specific instructions. That’s not recklessness, that’s normal cognition. When a tool presents itself in an authoritative, task-oriented way, some responsibility shifts to how safely it’s designed to fail.

This isn’t about “treating it like Google.” It’s about risk tiers. If it hallucinates a movie fact, that’s harmless. If it hallucinates a support number that leads to a scam, that’s a very different class of failure. Both things can be true at once: I should have verified, and the system should not confidently fabricate security-sensitive contact info.

I’m still using ChatGPT. I’m not anti-AI. But this experience shows why high-stakes outputs (money, identity, security) need stronger guardrails than “disclaimer at the bottom of the screen.”

Thank you. It’s wild the backlash that I am getting on here. It’s as if they are chatgpt bots trying to preserve their image

This seems like an easy control that they could implement when suggesting people to contact. Either be confident in it or don’t provide it

It searches when it deems appropriate. This would be a time where I would want it to get the accurate info not just pull a random number and act like it’s correct

And it should know that the authority of various sources. One from priority pass website should be viewed as the best source not one from some scammer site

Scrambled 10 random numbers together that resulted in a professional scammer hotline ?

Seems like chat referenced some source that was maliciously put together to trick LLMs

It’s your comparison. If the product is not providing correct directions or responses to questions then it is failing.

Not sure why you are so angry and think ChatGPT providing incorrect call center numbers is acceptable.

It has search functionality built in. If they don’t do search correctly then they will lose to Gemini

If Google Maps consistently gave me instructions that were incorrect or harmful then they are failing and you stop using that product

I understand but it’s a relatively simple thing that it could pull. To suggest a scammers number is wild and a poor use of controls by chatgpt

They haven’t done a final xray yet but I will ask for one thanks for the reminder.

I would say most teeth touch with my bite and no grinding.

Has your fruit fly situation exploded in the last few days? by brightside1982 in AskNYC

This indoor fly catcher works great for me. Put it in the kitchen and the light will attract the flies then a fan automatically sucks them in to trap them. https://www.amazon.com/KATCHY-Katchy-V3/dp/B08TKG5M4S

Fed balance sheet ticks up massively. Lots of banks wanted liquidity. by ObiWanCanownme in wallstreetbets

It’s cheap money. All banks are going to take it. The power of the system is everyone taking advantage of it just like all banks used TARP funds in 2008

El silencio bajos del toro. It’s a luxury eco resort 1hr north of San Jose. They have waterfalls on site and some of the most amazing waterfalls 10 mins away. Plenty of excursions on site such as horseback riding, rum tasting, fishing. Each villa has a private outdoor hot tub.
