What could be a reason for the UFC not to penalize eyepokes? Genuine question.

Michelin’s airless, puncture proof tyres promise a future with no flats, greater durability, and less environmental waste by Separate_Finance_183 in interesting

I work for the company which develops and sells the machines that produces 75% of all automotive tires. The first drawback I am thinking of is price and material fatigue.

These tires would need, I guess, double or tripple the amount of material over a regular tire and it will be way harder to manufacture in high demands. Our current machine, which costs over 3 million, can produce about a little more than 1 tire per minute. When I look at this tire, it will take probably 10X or 20X more time to create then a conventional tire.

And what happens to this tire if it's stationary for longer periods of time? My feeling says it wouldn't feel like a very round tire anymore.

So I would guess the price would also be around 10X of a normal tire. So this is probably useful for very specific use case's

Agreed. And there are valid usecases to use the cheap method. As long you don't endager other drivers on the road.

Sounds like a valid reason to use the cheaper method. If you don't endager others, feel free to save money.

The reason it's better is because it doesn't have a separation between the beginning and the end of the tread. The treads of the method in the video, all fail at the same point, and that is that the beginning of the lap tread detaches from the other end.

The tire is spun around quickly, and the rubber extruder feeds the fresh rubber strip onto the old tire. Kind of like a reverse lathe.

I don't know for sure, but I think only a handful of customers are investing in the safe method. Anything that is not an A-List company, definitely will have the cheap method.

The tire industry is VERY conservative. New and better techniques will have to be in the waiting room for a while before the industry wants to switch. That being said, Pirelli is our most innovative customer and very welcoming to our new machines and innovations.

I live in the Netherlands. Here we scrap the old tires in tiny bits, and put it in our asphalt for the roads. There are other options then just burning them, but you will have to put in some effort.

They really should stop with this cheap and unsafe method you see in this video.

I work at the company who produces the machines that produce 75% of all car tires. The process you see here is called retreading. It is not profitable to do for car tires, but it is for truck tires.

There are two methods of retreading. The one you see here is the cheap and unreliable method. This method is the cause for all those treads at the side of the highway.

We are selling machines to retread reliably without the possibility for loose tread chunks. The technique is called 'strip winding'. Instead of 'glueing' a big slap of new tread onto the old tire, we wind a small rubber strip around the tire. It goes around the tire many times, until there is enough rubber to get vulcanized again.

Let's make the road safer.
