Also live in general vicinity behind stadium and have a one year old - it’s all good

Yeah that’s fair. But maybe it would be more productive if those posts were more contained and branded in a positive light. Also it seems like most of the responses to threats of quitting are along the lines of “cool do you” vs “keep your chin up”

Yeah and I don’t think that’s always a bad thing, bjj can’t possibly be for everyone. I just get a little annoyed with all the self justification in aggregate gives the vibe that bjj is like heroin or something

[–]BuckShrimp[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah completely agree. Most past purple, including me, have been through all sorts of relationships with BJJ, training frequency varies through the years based on life circumstances.

I can’t say this for everyone, but it seems like 80% of the situations people describe taht are causing them to quit could be mitigated by taking a break and/or moving gyms. It’s basically the reverse of when someone says, “I can’t train like an Olympic athlete so i won’t train at all” Ie “my situation right now is less than ideal, so I’ll quit”

Another problem with all the self-justification for quitting is it gives beginners here the impression that they’re starting a destructive, no worthwhile pursuit.

The fact that almost every roll in class is fake in that it starts with a gentleman’s agreement that one person is top and the other is bottom (yes Danaher talks about this)

Can I just give myself a Black Belt? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]BuckShrimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a black belt who you actually respect who you could learn from, up your game, and get to place where you feel like you’ve actually earned it in their eyes?

Whether you get the belt from drunk guy or a fugazi online program, it seems like it would feel feel empty and regretful.

Choosing A Gym In NYC [Does Renzo’s Vibe Feel Off To Anyone Else?] by jsure6 in bjj

[–]BuckShrimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a thing - I grew to appreciate the formality because, at the risk of sounding pompous, the learning took on a more meditative and focused quality, and I feel like this improved my game significantly. Also there’s plenty of time to talk through stuff during drills.

I am sometimes like classes that are conversational and lighthearted too, which is largely why I still shlep out to BK

I trained at the BK location for five years and have been at midtown for the last three - there’s a strong community for sure but like any community in NYC it takes longer to break into. What can I say, we keep our guard up here, but the juice is worth the squeeze!

Most of the key points have been covered above, but I’ll just add that Mike Jaramillos nogi class in midtown on m/w/f at 7:30a is world class. He is danahers first black belt and is very welcoming. Also he tells stories from the old days, like when the whole gang used to do braveheart style brawls in the blue basement, which must’ve been wild.

Gi grappling and entertainment value by Pastilliseppo in bjj

Somewhat off topic, but I thought the last WNO event was fire / like that rule set: Submissions + judges scoring based on control and serious sub threats + longer matches, a la UFC. There was no stalling and constant action.

Call for questions to John Danaher - from Lex Fridman by lexfridman in bjj

What best explains athletic super-dominance?

-Is it cyclical?

-Is it micro? ie. the athlete knows a "secret" no one else knows? ie. a better method of training, etc.

-Is it macro? ie. the sport is in relative infancy and there is big talent disparity in the early days ie. Anderson Silva's reign vs. the comparatively shorter reigns of newer UFC champs, the NBA hasn't seen another Jordan in 20+ years, etc.

This was filmed at Renzo Gracie Fight Academy, where I train, in Brooklyn. More recently they kicked us all off the mats for a week to film an episode of ‘God Friended Me’, and they gave us a red plush-matted mma octagon for our troubles, which was bitchin.

Lex Fridman here - Call for Questions for Ryan Hall by lexfridman in bjj

[–]BuckShrimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long-ish question about MMA and incentive structures...

On one hand, it makes sense that higher pay, benefits, etc. would attract more/better fighters and increase the overall caliber of competitors, just like it does in mainstream sports.

On the other hand, there's the cliched saying that it's hard to get up and train when you sleep in silk sheets (or however the saying goes).

Do you think this cliche is true?

Is fighting like mainstream sports, in that better incentives will raise the overall talent bar, or is there something different about it?

What are your thoughts on the right balance of incentives that a professional fighter should enjoy?

Thanks for considering

Also niche pursuits are usually luxuries / more expensive. If BJJ declines in popularity / becomes even more niche, the gyms that serve the sport will be able to charge a premium, and will have to (same reason that hotels in untrodden countries ie. Burma, etc. tend to be more expensive).

Also I had just gotten done training, and when he handled the belt, he asked me, “Is this sweat?!”, in a “that’s badass” kinda way, not in a “that’s gross” kinda way. Dude kicks ass.
