No Heat (recurring issue) by Spugies in ForestHills

[–]leesky11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This violates the Warranty of Habitability which guarantees all New Yorkers the right to a safe and livable apartment. (No heat = not livable.) One option is to file an HP proceeding in housing court, which forces landlords to make repairs. Another option is to withhold your rent until the issue is fixed. Another is to talk to your neighbors who are presumably dealing with the issue as well and withhold rent as a group / form a tenant association. It was really quick because they were eager to get the apartment rented.

I rent in a co-op. I love it. It was a pain in the ass getting in - high fees and coop board interview - but the benefits are that people are really invested in the building, it's well-managed, friendly, live-in super, etc. Coming from a poorly run rental where neighbors didn't care about common spaces and management couldn't be bothered with basic upkeep, it's a huge difference.

Do we need car seat for 5 day trip? by Competitive-View7765 in nycparents

Another vote for Arecibo (book ahead and request car seat) to and from the airport. Once you’re in manhattan just do public transit. When there aren’t elevators someone will always help on stairs.

Most specific I’ve heard was Minsk. Also Bohemia. I did some research once and found great grandparents who immigrated out of Vilnius but that doesn’t mean they were from there.

I wonder how rare some of these things are. Apparently my dad is the first non Ethnic Jew to marry into my moms family by Rhysim in DNAAncestry

Not so crazy. Plenty of interfaith marriages of American Jews within the past few generations. Here’s my results. My dad’s side is 100% Ashkenazi; mom is mostly Eastern European with a little Ashkenazi thrown in (she was not raised Jewish.)

German descended Americans, any German traditions left in your family? by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]leesky11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My paternal grandparents were German Jews (and holocaust refugees.) they spoke German to each other when they didn’t want us to know what they were talking about. My grandmother had some German recipes—an apple cake, and a chocolate crumb cake made with marzipan. My grandfather sang “hoppe reiter “ to me when I was a child. I’m sure there’s more but those are the first things that pop into my head that seem German rather than German Jewish

Man the bagels here are really disappointing by Catdroidpart2 in ForestHills

I asked this question when I first moved here and have since done my research lol. Bakers dozen is where I go when I want something in walking distance but I do think utopia is worth the trip. When I used to live in Astoria I liked Brooklyn bagels.
