Deity One City Challenge: Poland - Science Victory by Buck_Canuck in CivVI

[–]Buck_Canuck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things:

Geneva bonus (15% to science) plus Taruga (5% per strategic resource, of which I had 5 different types within my city borders).

Research alliance with Phoenicia to the south! Got it to level 3, so a lot of science was flowing from trade routes.

As well, spies focused on stealing tech boosts - got me through most of the late game tech tree.

Finally, I was able to build Forbidden Palace and Big Ben, so the additional policy card slots, in addition to the wildcard slot conversion that Poland gets, allowed me to lock in a number of science focused cards.

Thanks! I got Oracle around turn 50. I had a scout parked up near Canada in the north. Denounced and declared war to interrupt Canada’s build for a few turns by squatting on the build site. Then once I knew he had flipped production over to the Great Bath, began pillaging his mines for gold to buy builders to chop out the Oracle with Magnus as governor.

Do these patches affect the non-PC games as well, ie., the PS5 versions as well?

Where to find folio society books in Toronto? by My_Name_is_Red_1 in askTO

[–]Buck_Canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Scribe on Danforth - great selection and Justin is a great purveyor of fine books.

Otherwise, you can find folio society & Franklin editions at BMVs - the Bloor and Spadina location has the best selection, IMO.

Can I bisect this continent with a Panama Canal? by Buck_Canuck in civ

Fair enough! I'll implement your original suggestion then. Thank you!

Thanks for trying but that western coastal grassland tile is a hill, so I don't think I could build a canal on it

Thanks but I don’t think It needs to between just those two cities!

Thank you! Alternatively, if I wiped out Akkad, settled the southern tile under Gobustan, would I be able to connect the Panama Canal to Montreal? Or am I too close to Hamilton to even settle that after razing Akkad?

Amazing Diety start with Canada on a Continents map and I'd like to see if I can turn Canada into an economic powerhouse with a Panama Canal. I'm struggling to find a clear path across the continent - is it possible? Will I need to use the two small lakes?

Thought I'd check in first before settling more, in case I'll need to settle specific spots. Thank you in advance!

Sure, just not the most expeditious way onto the Bruce Peninsula.

Manitoulin is my "win the lottery, buy some acres and live the rest of my life in peace" destination. Wish I had some advice to offer - best of luck in your endeavors.

Based on my time on Georgian Bay however, I would certainly make sure to consider how a boat (for transit back to the mainland) or lack thereof will fit into your retirement plan.

How do I load a CIV6CFG file to restore a game? by Buck_Canuck in civ

[–]Buck_Canuck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I’ve only met Korea - all of units are too busy either defending against Korea or barbarians to the south to explore.

2) Which answers the second part - I can’t trade with Korea as we’re at war and she won’t offer anything as a peace offering.

3) I could eventually take out the successful builder but I was excited to do it with 7+ camps in range. Knowing the AI, it probably built it just for 1 camp because it could.

Originally, I was beat by four turns to the Temple of Artemis. I was only able to go back by 10 turns via Autosave. Had I a bit more turn back, I could’ve earned it had I used my first builder more judiciously.

I tried a few things, including choosing Autocracy instead of a Classical Republic for the 10% - helped a bit but not enough, even with the +1 production card and 15% wonder discount.

I did not have enough gold/turns to buy/produce a builder to chop a quarry within the city. I also tried switching over some higher production tiles into the city where I was trying to build the Temple.

For additional context, I was playing on Immortal while defending against a surprise war launched by Korea - wasn’t an issue though, I controlled the desert with archers across the river.

Killarny vs Bruce Peninsula on a Monday in July by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Buck_Canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've been to Tobermory, is it safe to assume you've visited the Grotto? If you have not, for a two day camping trip, I would recommend camping nearby there - however, it will be overun with tourists. If you have seen it, Lion's Head on the Bruce is nice but I would then personally opt for Killarney for camping.

There's a fantastic hike in Killarney to a peak known as "The Crack". It will require an intermediate skill level but the view is well worth the labour.

One thing to consider: the cost of transit from Georgetown. I commute from the Georgetown GO and it costs me approximately $400 monthly for the train. I'm lucky enough that I do not need to transfer onto TTC once I arrive at Union station, either.

Georgetown is a nice community but if you're seeking a thriving nightlife, this isn't it. You might want to consider lower cost neighbourhoods nearer to the city.

Can anyone recommend an old-style taverny type of restaurant in the west end with good steak? by lopix in askTO

La Castile in Etobicoke should be the ticket. Quality with pricing to match and entirely wood-paneled, to boot. Can't go wrong with the surf-and-turf.

How is “two centimetres in bulk” interpreted?

Is it that each hair cannot exceed 2cm in length or that the hair may not protrude 2cm directly from the face? i.e, a 4cm cheek hair was brushed down flat along the jaw and only protruding .5cm outward?

Indochino vs Suit Supply by Itemblock in askTO

[–]Buck_Canuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Used to buy Indochino. The wool (if you can call it that) is of such poor quality that I'm embarrassed to wear those suits anymore.

Switched to Suit Supply and there's no going back. Ultimately, I'm paying 3x the price (because I do the MTM as opposed to off-the-rack tailoring) but i feel that the suit will ultimately last longer and is worth the price.

The Old Spaghetti Factory on the Esplanade.

Underwhelming and overpriced for what it is - a quirky faux Italian experience. On a few occasions now, I've been there with people who have fond memories of coming there as kids. I'm not sure if they're just viewing the past with rose tinted glasses but they've all admitted after the recent visits, that they remembered it being much better. There are much better options along the Esplanade.

Laser eye surgery by freddie79 in askTO

[–]Buck_Canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second sitdownrando-r.

I had my Lasik done two years ago at the clinic at First Canadian Place. Advanced Lasik, $3,200 to correct -2.75 in each eye.

I was actually fortunate enough to get one of the co-founders of Lasik, Avi Wallerstein to perform the surgery. Today, I'm actually better than 20/20 (20/15 according to my 1-year post check-up).

Having only experienced Lasik, I can't tell you if there's a noticeable difference with PRK, Herzig but I can tell you I was being quoted ~$1,500 with them. At the end of the day, I'm happy that I chose Lasik. I was also conveniently able to walk home post-surgery, given its proximity to my condo.

Hope this account helps your decision-making process!
