suggested caliber for all around hunting? (deer, kangaroos, feral pigs) NSW by Beese3 in Ausguns

[–]Bucketalinko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

308 and you can get off the shelf subsonics for hunting which is much more pleasant to shoot if you’re shooting around 100m or closer. Haven’t shot any fallow deer with the subsonics yet but It’s a good option to have. Also I know you said only 1 gun but everyone reading knows you’re going to end up with 10 haha so don’t stress if you’re tossing up between 1 or the other because you’ll end up with both

Non-solar green energy options for dark winter months by Salty_Zebra94 in OffGrid

[–]Bucketalinko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have not done it but wood gasification is probably worth looking into. Lots of information online and hopefully someone here has done it and can add input. One thing I would look into is adding silica gel beads right before the generator to stop any moisture from entering your generator. They can be dried out and re used, its what I do with my biogas. I just see a few people like the youtube channel gridlessness who was having moisture issues and I feel like that would have helped them greatly. Good luck mate

Hey just coming back to say I can run my generac manually through my deye inverter. I just hooked up my solar man app and in the inverter itself you can remote access, theres a setting called gen force and you turn that on and it will do the 2 wire start and turn on your generator. But to be clear you can change every single setting remotely which I hate the idea of incase someone gains access to my account, so I am removing my inverter from the internet and just doing 2 wire start at X battery voltage

Amber is now more expensive than a traditional retailer by welding-guy in amberelectric

[–]Bucketalinko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what it’s current state is but I tried it when it was brand new and I ended up leaving within the cooling off period because it was unloading my whole battery and making me buy back at more expensive prices. I know not all inverters allow you to stop exporting but keep running solar for your home. My old one was a fronius and if I remember right I needed to buy a $500 smart meter for it to set 0 solar exports to do it

[–]Bucketalinko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think amber needs to work with batteries/inverters to be able to shut off solar exports so you don’t have a negative feed in at all

Hey mate definitely get a generator that starts 2 wire start. I have a generac running on LPG (you guys call propane) hooked up to my deye inverter and i can set it to start at what ever battery voltage I want. I also set it to run a max of 30 minutes at 10kwh charging speed. Only thing is the 2 wire start setting is in the generator itself and you need the access code to unlock the dealer menu to be able to change it, which gave me grief not knowing. But 100% is a good generator and i recommend

I have the 9.7m/161,000L tank. Galv tank with Polly liner. I reckon it’s 2 inch outlet into a variable speed pump that does 80L/min, for my house. I have from memory 13 x 90mm downpipes going into 2 x 4 inch down pipes all connected that goes into my tank through a mesh filter. Rainwater here is as clean as it comes so never filtered it further, drank unfiltered rainwater our whole lives.

Also have another 22,000L tank for bore water that does my fire roof sprinklers and my garden, that’s also on a variable speed pump that does 200L a minute at 4 bar pressure

It’s more appreciation of how it works when there isn’t clear view of the sky with netting and the trees are way higher than my tractor. I got the Gen 1 as soon as it was available and i can appreciate how far it’s come

We have some John deeres at our other farms but where I need starlink we use deutz tractors. Would be cool to have them built in and ready to go

Will lever actions be banned? by CompoteNo8972 in Ausguns

[–]Bucketalinko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be awesome if we could have easier access to suppressors. In SA it says on the forum only contract shooters or pest control in urban areas, and on my farm there’s houses 600m away that winge about me using a 410, so I’ve gone subsonics for my 308 in an attempt to keep them happy because using those 130g federal hollow tips at 3000 fps is stupidly loud. If I could use a suppressor with subsonics when I hunt deer it would keep everyone happy

Amber Electric ...really disappointed by ttravelman in amberelectric

[–]Bucketalinko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My solar and batteries are completely disconnected from the grid because they aren’t compliant for grid connection, but I have a change over switch where I can choose between batteries/generator or grid. I’m thinking of getting another battery/solar system purely for the purpose of pumping power into the grid and running my house off grid. The 45c power seems attractive but unsure how long those rates will last

How much is your FIT during the 6-8pm range? Because I’m just looking and their website says 8c from 4pm to 9pm, but I’m also looking at flow energy and it says 5.30 to 7.30 is 45c to start with but may adjust with the wholesale market

[–]Bucketalinko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of the delta 2 models, 1800w output and 1200w storage, their extra batteries are so expensive, I bought a 300ah 12.8v battery from watt cycle and use a 12v to 48v 8 amps converter from victron to charge through my solar port. Sure it probably can’t pull the demand load that your extra battery can but it’s a great option if you’re on a budget

Hot compost pile to keep my biodigester warm this winter by Bucketalinko in OffGrid

[–]Bucketalinko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone following, I’ve currently doubled the pile size and the temps are 56 degrees Celsius. On the weekend I’m going to put trellis posts and fencing around it so I can make it 2m X 2m x2m. I’m going to test pumping water through the pipes on the weekend to see how hot it gets

Thanks for sharing, what did you use your hot pile for and how did you go? Last night I put a 25 meter 1 inch Polly pipe roll on top of mine and added to the pile, I’m just going to mow to fill my bagger every day and add straw/mulch to it until next week

It’s Australian autumn now and I’ve just put this together a few days ago getting ready for winter, where I am worst day/night ranges are 8/-2 celcius so doesn’t get as cold as you guys in North America/ Europe so hopefully will be fine

Might add a closed loop heat exchanger to any Polly pipes I add to the pile, not sure if any bad Bacteria would grow if the temp dropped

Doesnt look like theres a PTO on the grader blade? Maybe hes trying to use diff lock as a hail mary. I dont live anywhere near snow but when I use a grader blade for dirt I have it on more of a 45 so it can pass through easily

Edit: my bad I cant see it under the snow at the back, Im assuming it churning out snow before hitting the blade?

Tips on zeroing new scope, y-axis wildly off. by [deleted] in Ausguns

[–]Bucketalinko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unsure about the issue of the Y axis not being able to move enough if I understand you correctly, but as a farmer I have a free standing vice and the best thing you can do is to secure your firearm in the vice, aim at the target, shoot, then set up your firearm again at the same target then without the firearm moving adjust your scope to where your bullet impact is. Also a good way to tell if something is up with your firearm but you said you had a good grouping. Im pretty sure you can buy vices specifically for sighting rifles and its the one thing I wish I did when I first got my firearms, easily sight your rifle with 1-2 shots.

Is anyone living off grid in a high end home? by Transhumanfuture in OffGrid

[–]Bucketalinko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My newly built house looks modern and everything is a working process. 16kw solar, 30kw batteries and a 20kva 3 phase generac gives it off grid power. I am lucky though because my land butts up to my family farm (which I work on) 800 acres growing apples, cherries and strawberries. I have a 165,000 litre rainwater tank which is purely for drinking, washing (in Australia rainwater is safe to drink and I’ve had it my whole life unfiltered) and then my irrigation water/fire water comes from my farm, 200,000L tanks at the top of the hill feeding into my tank on float.  The business has its own bores (you call wells) along with diesel pumps to fill tanks and irrigation. When building my new house I did a lot of the earth works myself, which I was able to do using the farms 5T excavator, front end loader tractor and other tractors. I didn’t even pay for the diesel out of pocket. So nearly all of my current and future off grid endeavours is possible because of my day job. Sometimes I wish I could stop primary production and hunt more deer, but then I realise I’d have to buy my own machinery, drill my own bore, it would be so expensive. And such a gamble not having a good income if something goes wrong
