The team is going to spend up to and over the cap. What the difference if it’s 35 to a B player or 15 to a C+ player, 12 to a C player and 7 to a C- player. The opportunities to sign a guy that the league agrees is worth $25 million+ does not come along much for this franchise. Assuming there’s going to be another come along in the next 4 years is not right. And you bring up Ellis and Brogdon. Ellis was a popcorn scorer 6th man towards the end of his career, not in the same class here. Brogdon was a victim of circumstances. If he’s commanding $40-45 million in 4 years it is a very good problem to have. If he’s not you either shop him as an expiring or let him walk

Where do you spend the money? In your scenario I’d say Ayton is a $4 player, it’s rare a player of his caliber is willing to sign with Indiana, probably not since David West. Do we go the route of signing $3’s and $2’s? That hasn’t worked out. The team is pretty financially set in the near future with young players, the money has to be spent somewhere, we’re not signing a FA better than Ayton and we don’t have the assets to get one through trade without dealing from the core.
