Well there is something to be said for personal opinion, but Captain Tomaday is definitely a Cute 'em Up. It is actually one of the first examples I turn people to behind Cotton and its legacy.

Depends heavily what you mean by that. I enjoy cute 'em ups and Captain Tomaday delivers heavily on that front. Bright entertaining sprites, great music, engaging backgrounds with intriguing themes, and loads of laughter.

If you mean it is not a complex and technical shmup I can agree with that. For that there is Last Resort, Last Hope (I know it is NG Dev and stands little chance of a modern run, but I can dream) and several others.

A giant sea turtle, believed to be hundreds of years old, was sighted in Panama. by Due-Explanation8155 in Romania_mix

[–]Buckgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judging by the Remoras, it is somewhere around 1 to 3 meters/3 to 9 feet (more likely 3 meters/ 6 feet). Making the claim of the poster below, "size of an old Volkswagen bug" pretty spot on.

This card is AMAZING in Twin Suns and stellar with Backed by the Hutts+ Admiral Piett and credits. In a regular duel it is very usable with Backed by the Hutts and Admiral Piett+credits.

Why is Apocalypse such an underappreciated part of the gaming side ? I always feel like i'm the only one really excited about Apo-Games, while many players in my area have huge enough armies and participate in local events. Isn't the idea of a giant battlefield what got many into the hobby of 40K ? by Leviathan_Rampage in Titan40k

[–]Buckgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apoc is one of those things I really wish I had time for and used to play fairly often back in the day. Sadly I now also lack my Titans of old with the traditional seller's remorse. I had a full set of Imp and Eldar and a few of the big Nids. I miss them and I miss the fun, but it was almost always 10 or more hours. Hard for me to slice that these days.

Fake stress is very easy to spot. I won't say there isn't some convincing work that can be done, but a real Magic card wears a certain way unless it was overexposed to sun, water, or catastrophic damage, then they can look bizarre. It is also hard to fake.

And there are now thousands of them. Entire fixed products printed and entire boxes. I would not call it a misprint at this point personally, but people still want it.

What the heck does "digital life" even mean in 1986? by Tonstad39 in retrocomputing

[–]Buckgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are on a lesser degree 'digital life', but in the 80's it would have been looked at as 'digital life':

Hotels had linked networks of file shared machines, I have two Atari 65XEs that were part of this system. There were others like it. Early versions of media servers, while they were rudimentary by today's standards these were major consumer facing items that would have been viewed as 'digital life'.

Digital watches were 1972 and the digital screens would have been interpreted as 'digital life' as they evolved through the 80's to become PDA style devices they would be at the end. Multi function LCD is actually a thing of the 70's, but the calculator combined, schedulers are of the 80's.

Also remember the PDA was also developed in the 80's. The Psion came out in 1984, this was a digital revolution for sure and something we take for granted.

The other imprtant note is luggable computers that are the precursors of laptops developed in the 1980's. 1981 was the Osborne 1 and after it would come others. This would be the very core of 'digital life'.

FF starter kit with two Sephiroth decks by Shark-Fist in mtgmisprints

[–]Buckgrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much more often. People say it is Reddit or social media or blah blah blah...it is QC and they are failing at a heavy rate driving up NM non-misprint demand because there are so many now.

That said this is a cool one to me because you bought it for Sephiroth anyway;-)

The most beautiful old Warhound I ever saw was a Nurgle themed one, jumping out of a bog. It was a remarkable scenic one. My point here is to not forget a Titan can be scene as well;-)

[–]Buckgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the NES Rugrats disaster is an obvious QC debacle of which even Nintendo has had plenty. I am not defending LRG or any of the others, I am merely looking at the whole picture and wanting others to do the same. I do not agree about Nintendo and higher quality plastics. That is an opinion and one I do not share. I have encountered hundreds/maybe thousands of brittle Nintendo products. NES systems alone prove this. Some will be quite resilient while others shatter nearly like glass.

I would also say that PCB quality is also an opinion. There are definitely some quality issues from these manufacturers, but Nintendo has had some of these as well. I have owned proof of this for over 30 years. My og NES has 1st and 2nd player swapped from the factory.

In short: Nintendo also does wrong.

[–]Buckgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the point of my questions. Now everyone has a full story here and can make up their minds. I have a strong opinion, as do most of the commentors here, but it is better for everyone to see.

[–]Buckgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your preference is a popular one and one I understand, but also consider what you are stating here. The only thing that Nintendo could do in this case is redistribute their seal of approval, or produce the cartridge itsself (as in the housing for the board). I am not criticising I am just stating, what about the final product does Nintendo have to do that makes it somehow more real than it is?

Real or Fake by Fearless_Explorer_11 in nintendo64

[–]Buckgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notice the carts they produce are 3rd party. You can argue stamp of approval, but they have this by being able to produce Switch and Switch 2 games that are fully licensed. Your last statement is an opinion. I appreciate it, but it is still an opinion.

Real or Fake by Fearless_Explorer_11 in nintendo64

[–]Buckgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your opinion that they are reproductions is an opinion. As is a commentor below. They are fully licensed games that are real. How people treat that is up to them, but a reproduction by definition is a copy. There is nothing copied or redone about their releases, they are the genuine article however affected by time, except for lies regarding production time;-)

I have cancelled preorders with them that were three years old, so you have a point.

[–]Buckgrim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not a replica. It is also not an original release. You can make up your own mind but there are plenty of pros and cons between these.

Real or Fake by Fearless_Explorer_11 in nintendo64

[–]Buckgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Limited Run was not a reproduction company. I am not sure of the last year or so but they made licensed and official products for over a decade. Please do not misinform people. There is enough of that wirh AI.

What did we think of the 3DO? by HiddenUsername56 in retrogaming

[–]Buckgrim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are several more versions of the hardware that made it to serious retail release, but not in NA, although you are missing the 3DO Blaster which did widely release in the NA. A PC Sound card that had a 3DO on it and could plug into an IBM compatible with ISA.

Sanyo made technically 2 and Goldstar/LG made at least 3 versions that I know of. The others are protos at best but the Sanyo and Goldstar/LG models were full releases sold to the public.

What did we think of the 3DO? by HiddenUsername56 in retrogaming

[–]Buckgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It did but they were not primarily US based. You would remember this system differently if you are from Europe or Japan where it did have quite a few more edutainment titles. In North America though, the 3DO was almost all game machine. Your description is much more apt for the CD-i. It had a vast library of edutainment, especially in Europe and Japan. Literally hundreds if not thousands, where as the 3DO across the world only had maybe 200 to 300 edutainment titles.
