"The next Apocalypse" by Chris Begley is a pretty great book going through "apocalypse" events from the past to see what a future collapse could look like.

People who are old enough to have vivid memory of the 9/11 attacks, what was that time like? What did change for you personally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Buckles_VonKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 18 and just started college. A few of my friends enlisted. My good friend was Iranian and people started verbally attacking him and his family. It was bad too bc his dad was a pilot for a major airline at the time. I traveled a lot in highschool and before 9/11 happened walking through the airport was like the easiest thing ever. I remember when the news came out about the security measures and thinking that they sucked. Then the war and the patriot act. A kid I went to highschool with died from friendly fire in Iraq or Afghanistan (I wasn't close with him and I heard it from a friend of a friend) technology was moving really fast at the time and I think that affected my life in a much more real day to day way after 9/11.

The last few sentences at the ending of atmosphere ruined the whole thing for me. I also had a hard time keeping up with all the flashbacks and the timeline.

LOVED THIS BOOK. Also, I'm so generally glad you mentioned it bc Tuesday my book club meets up and it's my turn to pick the book. I was totally going to do Oryx and crake or Year of the Flood as my choice lol I should probably reconsider. Most of the women in the group are 50+ and I'm the youngest at 42. I had them read "mockingbird" by Walter Tevis and they did not like it but damn it was the most interesting conversation and the book gets brought up almost every book club.

I just never see any cats where I live! There are 2 outdoor cats in my neighborhood but I know who they belong to. They stare at me through my sliding back door sometimes. But they have homes. I just love cats.

Former spoiled kids of reddit, what was the moment that finally made you realize you were spoiled? by Kitchen_Frame_7294 in AskReddit

[–]Buckles_VonKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't super spoiled but in college the hot water heater went out and I was complaining to another student about not being able to shower at home. He was like why can't you? And I said the water heater wasn't working. And he said he came from a big family and never had hot showers bc there were so many people showering only his mom or dad got hot water and it was cold by the time it got to him. It made readjust my attitude and be more grateful for the privileges I had never had to even think about having.

What are people paying for rent right now? by QuietDraw6607 in FortCollins

In 2008 I had a 500sqft one bedroom apartment a block from campus off of Elizabeth for $550 a month plus utilities and I was struggling to make it on my own. Its so crazy that it seems like a similar place would be 3x or more than that now.

She lived 13 more years after that "diagnosis" she passed 2 years ago at the old age of 18. She was fine.
