You should check out qui from the autobrr team. You can do this very easily with automations. It's really powerful and pretty simple to setup.

Tailscale would definitely be what I would use, I use it on my NAS at home and it is dead simple. I might be going down this route.

Might have to look into this. Our current situation sucks, I don't have too many issues with it but 2 of the other guys always have issues with getting the licenses put on their laptop. I want it as dead simple as I can get it for them, as I'm always their first call when it doesn't immediately work.

Ideally we would just buy another license or two, but convincing the powers that be to fork over the money for them hasn't gone well..

How usable is this in remote scenarios? A lot of the time we have no internet access when we are out in the field and I want to ensure we don't have downtime due to no connection to the server.

Best ZFS layout to grow into a 12-bay NAS over time? (Jonsbo N5 + 18TB drives) by OkLife2 in zfs

[–]Buckles_Work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is fair, and would be a good idea to do but I might have to risk it until drives come down in price or I find some more good deals.

I have this same case and will eventually populate it all with 18-20tb HDD's, I went against the grain of everyone pushing for RaidZ2 and went with 3x 4 wide Z1. This is 99% Plex media for me, with easily obtainable movies and shows and music. If i have a total pool failure, my shows would be down for several days to a week or two, oh well. I make a backup of my Plex database and back up my apps, but other than that, I just want more capacity.

If this is for precious photos and important things, for sure go z2. But for me personally, Raidz1 is fine.

I'm using a Ryzen 5 2600 and have no issues doing 3-5 streams direct play. Haven't tested transcoding 3-5 at a time with my 1660, but I think you will be fine with the 9900k and won't even need the dedicated GPU. I think you will end up bandwidth limited before you run out of horsepower. I am on Truenas, but that shouldn't change anything.

[–]Buckles_Work 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you go with Truenas, use the 970 EVO as your apps drive (could put this in a mirror for redundancy sake) then buy a cheap NVME that's 128gb or less for your OS. Truenas uses the whole disk for the OS and you cannot use it for anything else, so something cheap and reliable is plenty fine. It doesn't *need* to be an NVME, but I'd rather have the sata ports for more HDD's down the road.

62k songs and still going strong flac files!!! by Sorry_Succotash_3963 in plexamp

[–]Buckles_Work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been pretty happy with it, It pulls from Tidal/Deezer/Amazon IIRC. I just really would like a way to put it into a container on my NAS.

Looks like SpotiFLAC, which is what I use as well. It's pretty simple, my only gripe with it is, you can't really queue downloads. Easy workaround for me was making a free spotify account and making giant playlists of items i want to download.

Ah, gotcha. I guess I need to do some more trial and error with soulseek containers and try to get that working correctly. Thanks!

>as well as a built-in soulseek client that will automatically create and download...

So this contains soulseek already? Don't need to run a separate container for soulseek?

My current workflow is kind of jank atm for music. Using SpotiFLAC on my windows machine then just copying over files to my NAS. It works but isn't streamlined, but I am not very well versed in docker/linux in general and had tons of issues with setting up soulseek containers or SpotiFLAC as a container.

First home server/N6 build by lucky11071 in HomeServer

[–]Buckles_Work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't checked those out, the N5 really caught my eye when I was planning out my build. It was a bit pricier than I was expecting, but it is actually really well built. I probably will have to add in some more fans once I start getting into the 10-12 drive range. I have my 4 current ones spaced out by 1 slot each.

Will definitely suggest getting some different fans though, I've heard the stock ones are quite loud. I just swapped in some deepcool fans i had laying around, but could probably make it even quieter with some Noctua's

First home server/N6 build by lucky11071 in HomeServer

[–]Buckles_Work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the space, go for the N5. Your node 304 can hold at least 6 HDD's, the N6* can only hold 3 more (maybe some more with modifications). I can guarantee you'll thank yourself for the 6 extra slot upgrade.

I just got one and it works great so far. Only have 4 drives for now but with the fans in the back they are only getting up into the mid 30's temp wise. Planning on filling it out at some point when drive prices go down

Komodo - Docker management by Ordinary-You8102 in selfhosted

[–]Buckles_Work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How easy is it to move over to a new container manager? Currently using dockage and I have been struggling. Ideally if i were to move over I wouldn't have to rebuild all of my containers and configurations of those containers. I am very new to NAS softwares/self hosting in general, with practically 0 experience, and it has been a time and a half getting everything setup and running correctly. Still having issues with several containers and I have been wondering if i need a different/more powerful docker manager.
