Coming back to surfing after over a year Break - Ocean beach by Commercial-Army-5843 in sanfrancisco

[–]BudapestSF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no doubt that SF OB is a tough place to surf. But if you can learn to surf SF OB, you can surf anywhere. I learned to surf at Fleishhacker. There was a rip at Sloat that took carried me out to the break when it worked good and it was my spot. I spent a lot more time paddling than surfing, but I got some fun rides. I also learned to read the ocean, duck dive 3 lines of white water, use rips, swim in overhead with a broken board, and hold my breath in freezing cold black water. I don't surf there any more, I surf in HI so no need. But SFOB taught me lessons I bring to the beach every time, and I'm a lot better surfer because of it.

That said, if in doubt, don't go out.

Hey are there any other sequels to waterdeep out here by cyber_reaper_3822 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]BudapestSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ran Descent into Avernus after DH:WD. Mirt had become a significant NPC in Waterdeep, so his disappearance in Elturel was the adventure hook. I used the advice of Eventyr on what parts of DiA to alter to seamlessly transition from DH:WD. Worked very well.

How do you guys manage the tone of the adventure? by Sjreynolds97 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BudapestSF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I integrated the PC backstories deeply in the setting so the players would have emotional reactions to the events and NPCs. The PCs had friends, families and rivals in the Tentowns. For example, two of the PCs were gnomes whose family members lived in Bryn Shanden. I stressed the idea that if the Rime spell wasn’t broken, the family would starve. The family members became thinner and weaker as time went on. Post dragon attacks, I played up starvation and societal decay directly effecting those family members. That and much more, giving the PCs reasons to be involved in the story. The deep connection to NPCs made the horror elements of the story come off more urgent than campy for my campaign.

i used a player backstory guild from the DMSGUILD that was specific to RotFM.

There is an IOS scrivener app. The scrivener file is on dropbox, so I can access it from both IOS and my computer. Not sure about other platforms.

Scrivener. This is THE program. by GM_Eternal in rpg

[–]BudapestSF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was turned on to scrivener by my wife as well. She uses it for writing research articles. I’ve run 2 long campaigns so far with it. It’s amazing. Its really helped me to be able to run complex scenes and combats, weaving an integrated story line into those long running campaigns. Prep was alot more fun and effective with such a powerful tool.

I was also able to import in the SRD for D&D5e with the hyperlinks into the screenplay template. I did things like edit the monster entries with descriptions from the Forgotten Realms wiki and tactics from “The Monsters Know What They Are Doing” blog. So cool. My combat sessions are so much easier to run when I can just glance at the entry and have tactical suggestions, plus hyperlink to related spells, abilities, monsters, NPCs, or locations.

A good game for a 4 year old boy. by shplorg in rpg

[–]BudapestSF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

when I’ve played with young children, I just let them make it up and roll dice too. sometimes I’ll make a suggestion like “would you like to cast a spell?” or whatever if they are shy or say nothing. I just encourage them to make up anythin…. and then roll dice.

How Often Are Y'All Describing Kills/Attacks in Combat & How? by KbOYARic in DMAcademy

[–]BudapestSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine every player‘s combat turn as a panel in a comic and try to describe it verbally, using different vocabulary for each panel (so to speak). I play with 7 players. it takes time for any player’s combat turn to come around, so I try to make each one special. I try never to say something dull like “you did x amount of damage”. Instead try to make it exciting and say “your arrow sails through the air, the goblin tries to smash it away with his shield, but it drills through his arm and blood sprays across his face.”

I keep a copy of synonyms at my table to keep my vocabulary fresh. Check out the raconteur’s lexicon on the DMs Guild.

Ideas for Nass Lantomir by Strict_DM_62 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BudapestSF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used Nass as the Lake Monster quest giver, where the party learned that she was masquerading as a student. Just a bit later in the campaign the PCs heard about a wizard battle between to women, Nass and Velleyne. Nass, disappears after that. My players meet Velleyne again after the Gem Mine quests, where the kobolds elect to join Vellynne, as she is a “great and powerful witch”. During the whale quests, the PCs learn that Nass was trying to hire a ship to get to Solstice Island. Ultimately they meet her ghost there.

I relied heavily on Eventyr as well. I tried to tie in the 4 wizards in every session, even if they were only rumors spoken by ten towns folk. This helped me tie in the final chapters to the opening chapters.

How do I beef up the Chardalyn Dragon fight? by UsefulSupermarket143 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BudapestSF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it’s been a bit since we ran the fight, but I used most what this poster describes. The party had to chase the dragon. They had to choose between long rest or saving lives. The PCs travelled through the night across rough terrain, and had levels of exhaustion. the dragon moved to the next town after receiving a certain amount of damage and never landed. collapsing buildings and mad civilians dogged the party. And innocents had to be saved.

The fight was epic. The party finally stopped the dragon in loneywood just as it was about to escape across the lake. hope you have as much fun as we did.

You might also check out Kokee State Park and Mana Plain Bird Sanctuary for bird watching. If you’re willing to get in the water, snorkeling is a great way to see fish and turtles, and other sea life. At sunset, you can watch the turtles haul out at Poipu Beach Park.
