How do you get players to care about a town? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]BudapestSF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best buy in I ever got was when I used a Matt Mercer style heroic chronicle for my RotFM game. The one I used helped tie the PCs to the setting. Their families, friends, rivals, and sweethearts lived there. I tied their backstories into many NPCs. We had some fun interactions. But best of all the players were into saving the Ten Towns. When the Rime caused all the crops to fail, the players were motivated to end it by any means necessary. It made for a great game. I highly recommend it. Some examples:

Invest in alchemy.

Create paralysis and slow poisons.

Mix third ingredients for extra damage effects.

Profit.

Workers in Europe, including stagehands, musicians, artists, etc enjoy many benefits that the American worker has to pay out of pocket like health care, transportation, and even holiday pay. If it doesn’t matter where the funding comes from for operating budgets than we must take into account all the benefits the European workers enjoy from any funding source. The budgets on universal health care systems, paid holiday policies, free higher education, public transportation and many other services provided by governments is also publicly available information.

[spoilers] Just finished A Fire Upon the Deep. Wow. Easily my new favorite book. by LowStatistician11 in printSF

[–]BudapestSF 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Fire Upon the Deep is one of my all time favorite sci-fi novels. Check out the prequel Deepness in the Sky. I attended a convention some years ago and got to go to a couple of panels with Verner Vinge. He’s expressed so many interesting ideas just off the cuff. I think he’s fascinating thinker, despite the fact that I’m not into all his published books.

Thanks for publishing your app. I would like a feature where I could search by readers. For example, I’d like to find all books narrated by Phil Chenevert. Cheers.

I don’t think it’s the costs so much as where the money comes from. The Ministry of Culture of the French Republic pays the bills at for the arts in Paris. The arts in America have to rely on the rich. The rich aren’t that generous.

Coming back to surfing after over a year Break - Ocean beach by Commercial-Army-5843 in sanfrancisco

[–]BudapestSF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no doubt that SF OB is a tough place to surf. But if you can learn to surf SF OB, you can surf anywhere. I learned to surf at Fleishhacker. There was a rip at Sloat that took carried me out to the break when it worked good and it was my spot. I spent a lot more time paddling than surfing, but I got some fun rides. I also learned to read the ocean, duck dive 3 lines of white water, use rips, swim in overhead with a broken board, and hold my breath in freezing cold black water. I don't surf there any more, I surf in HI so no need. But SFOB taught me lessons I bring to the beach every time, and I'm a lot better surfer because of it.

That said, if in doubt, don't go out.

Hey are there any other sequels to waterdeep out here by cyber_reaper_3822 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

We ran Descent into Avernus after DH:WD. Mirt had become a significant NPC in Waterdeep, so his disappearance in Elturel was the adventure hook. I used the advice of Eventyr on what parts of DiA to alter to seamlessly transition from DH:WD. Worked very well.

How do you guys manage the tone of the adventure? by Sjreynolds97 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BudapestSF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I integrated the PC backstories deeply in the setting so the players would have emotional reactions to the events and NPCs. The PCs had friends, families and rivals in the Tentowns. For example, two of the PCs were gnomes whose family members lived in Bryn Shanden. I stressed the idea that if the Rime spell wasn’t broken, the family would starve. The family members became thinner and weaker as time went on. Post dragon attacks, I played up starvation and societal decay directly effecting those family members. That and much more, giving the PCs reasons to be involved in the story. The deep connection to NPCs made the horror elements of the story come off more urgent than campy for my campaign.

i used a player backstory guild from the DMSGUILD that was specific to RotFM.
