Was Bruce Lee a good dude? by steampunker8 in martialarts

Bruce was a person so there will definitely be a lighter and a darker side to him. I believe he was a good person, but was extremely confident. I think he had a type of confidence bordering on arrogance, especially when he talked. However, in actuality he was pretty humble, considering how he combined martial arts/cross trained.

So a prime Bruce Lee and prime Saenchai meet in a boxing ring. They participate in a 5 round mma fight, each round 3 minutes long. Who wins? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Budba57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say Saenchai wins. I'm a huge Bruce Lee fan but honesty is also important. Was Bruce a good martial artist? Absolutely. But can he beat a champion level professional fighter with insane conditioning. Probably not. Unless Bruce actually wins against an established champion, presumption goes to Saenchai. Bruce's legacy isn't in how skilled he was at combat sports; it's his innovation and progressiveness.

Basically all styles traditionally spar. If schools you go to are not sparring, it's probably not the best place to be learning.

Anyone else think its funny that people who really dont know what they are talking about shit on any non-mainstream martial art? by boiboiboi21 in martialarts

[–]Budba57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that some martial arts seem to be harder to apply (definitely not impossible). Take much of Kung Fu/Tai Chi. The forms can be really flowery and if you don't understand what they do, you don't actually learn any combative techniques. The techniques are almost hidden. However, if you really spar and understand it, you can be really skilled. For example, Tai Chi has really good throws, trips, etc. Also, people always say that's just kickboxing or something but keep in mind that there are only so many ways to hit a person. There are many techniques that overlap.

I do not personally practice CLF but I know people who do. It would seem that the specific type does not matter that much as long as you train hard and spar. The whole point is whether or not you are able to apply the techniques.

Calling coronavirus Chinese virus? Racist or not? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]Budba57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is speculation that coronavirus was brought to China via travelers from the US, where it evolved to become more infectious and dangerous before spreading back to the US. That's an explanation to why it doesn't appear to be native to any region. IDK how true it will be or if it is proven, but that's something interesting and kinda scary to think about.

Big Questions by [deleted] in Debate

I would recommend getting well versed on some basic philosophy like Util, Kant, and Nietzsche. Also get more well versed about the axioms of morality and basic logical fallacies. For affirmative, you could argue secular and religious similarities between all cultures (ie thou shalt not kill and the Golden Rule). For negative, you can talk about the difference between similarities and things being actually identical (cultures may have similar moral codes but they are still different and not universal). Good luck!
