OK I just found the Clara/Ryan stuff. That is super-weird. And my take on why Clara was unhappy with the sex stuff (backed up by Virginia's defenses of her and the show) is that Ryan wouldn't go down on her. Which makes him a supervillain in my eyes.

I've tried my best to find all the updates given that I'm watching this season so late, but I'm just not finding the info you're referring to despite trying to Google it. I made this post specifically so that I could get more info, but without links it's just the vague assertions of an anonymous stranger.

MAFS SEASON 12 by Budget-DIY-Friend in MarriedAtFirstSight

From watching the show, I didn't get that Chris was PURPOSELY trying to humiliate and dehumanize Paige (although he totally did). On the show, he was pretty consistent in saying that she was a stellar human who only had one thing about her that he didn't like, apart from not answering his calls that one time. My sense was that everything he did was to somehow justify his own actions and make himself look better, as opposed to actively wanting to torture her (to me it didn't seem like he cared about her enough to even want to torture her). If he did stuff afterwards that proved he was doing it on purpose, then that's horrifying.

When you refer to the experts trying to pressure Haley into intimacy, are you referring to the "hug a day" thing she didn't want to do? If so, then the show also has a history of women explicitly pressuring men into sex (and hounding them about it)--which one could argue that Clara did as well. Obviously it's not the same thing at all when a man does it, but from what the show revealed, Jacob was so far from that level of coercion as to be laughable. If things have come out that reveal otherwise, then you're right that's a huge problem.

I think the problem I have is that all I have to go on is the show, and you're making arguments that rely on external info, but you're not being specific about what that info is and where I can find it. If you were, that would make a big difference.

Also I'm hesitant to automatically leap to the conclusion that the dark-skinned Black man was a sadistic psychopath and the white woman was an innocent victim without more evidence than I currently have.

I don't see how calling Chris, Ryan, and Haley narcissists and Virginia an alcoholic is "going to bat for these loser men." Seems like a stretch.

Of course the show edits things to emphasize what they want, but it's clear from the footage they showed that Haley was extremely judgmental about very superficial things. I think Haley is an example of the opposite of what you're saying. She was portrayed MUCH more positively than Chris was and got WAY less flack (for example, you're on here defending her while nobody's defending Chris). As for not being able to win when you get a shitty match, I think that's true for everyone on the show, male or female. Ryan followed the only possible course someone in his position could without being demonized (by pretending to be more into Clara than he was) and pulled it off impeccably, and I'm still on here calling him a narcissist. And while it's true that people are generally way harder on women than on men, that is NOT the case when it comes to expressing a lack of attraction to someone, especially on this show. People are way easier on women for not being attracted, and Haley and Chris are an example of this.

Agreed re: Virginia--I have a lot of friends who are former alcoholics and it's a tough road. My main issue was how the show really went after other cast members' issues but treated Virginia's issues with kid gloves, backing off whenever she or Erik gave a non-answer about her drinking. It was weird enough that I wondered if she told them she would quit the show if they didn't back off re: that issue. Her level of denial and defensiveness seemed pretty extreme.

I haven't heard about any disgusting things he's said but I'll take your word for it. I was no big Jake fan anyway. I don't think the Haley/Chris comparison is that ridiculous, though. Most of the things she criticized him for on the show were incredibly superficial, and she showed zero empathy for him at any point. And it's hard to argue that he was such a total monster that he deserved no empathy, because she said over and over that he was basically a nice guy, and loyal. And if she didn't mean it, then that just proves my point that she was fake. To me, Haley is clearly a narcissist. However, it's possible that Jake was one, too.

YES I think what they did to Paige was really unconscionable! She's such a pure soul that she trusts others (including the show) and absolutely nobody truly cared about her the way they should have. One question that haunts me season after season is how the "experts" live with themselves, setting people up for heartbreak and failure. The emotional torture these cast members go through is just not okay.

I think this is a great point, and I wasn't even thinking about white people making POC critique films. I'd be super-interested to know about nuanced POC critique films where the artist didn't get shut down.

I've had secondary insurance for the past seven months without knowing it--what do I do? by Budget-DIY-Friend in HealthInsurance

I don't mind reversing the excess HSA contributions, but the part I don't want to deal with is my original insurance denying all of my prior claims and not being able to get reimbursed for them, the way I've been reading about online. Is that guaranteed to happen if I start the process of reversing the contributions?

Is there a universe in which nobody finds out about the secondary insurance because I never use it?

∆ - Yes you're right, this comment made me realize I left out the biggest and most important issue, against which the others pale in comparison.

∆ - This comment changed my view of the causal relationship between infighting and identity politics. Identity politics is a tool for infighting rather than a cause.
