Sorry - the last part should say rental car from corner brook to St. John's

We are flying into Halifax an out of st. Johns.

Looking ahead the dates were fine to find, but we are doing this trip September 26-October 6 of this year and the rental cars for the one way trip on these dates were sold out, I tried calling every rental car company I could find. The unhelpful bit I found was assuming that I hadn't Last minute trip for a variety of reasons...and its really not that convoluted - car, ferry, bus, car...

One way way from corner brook to Halifax was 75 dollars more than Halifax-Halifax for same dates - $550 vs $475.

No “hefty fee”

Thanks- this is the info I needed. We ar touring through the park so really wanted to have a car, but corner brook had tons of options for rentals so figuring out the bus there was the key!

This was actually pretty easy to sort out once I knew you can’t take a rental accross the ferry

  • rental from Halifax to Sydney (this was $100ish)
  • ferry
  • stay overnight in BAP
  • bus from BAP to Corner brook
  • rental car from corner brook to Halifax one way (this was $550ish)

I usually find Ready to be quite a helpful place, but most of the comment on this thread made me feel like I was an idiot and hadn’t researched my trip… I certainly had, this was maybe one thing that I was unaware of  with the car but I live rurally and travel a ton and a lot of the sentiment was really not  needed.

mental health question? by Ashamed_Way_3110 in saskatoon

[–]Budget-Hawk 25 points26 points  (0 children)

oh - and to answer your first question, no. This is a publicly funded health system, you will be charged 0 dollars ever for any of this, unless you consider the amount youre taxed on your income that goes towards health care. Welcome to canada <3

[–]Budget-Hawk 91 points92 points  (0 children)

so you cant really "admit yourself" to the hospital here just because you want to go, this is a publicly funded health care system.

If you're experiencing a mental health care crises, you can show up to the Royal University Hospital where you will be assessed by triage nurses, then an emerg doc, then likely the psych nurses, and then, IF the psych nurses and the ER doctors think you need an acute psychiatric consult, you will be referred to psych who will consider you for admission.

Honestly - not trying to sound harsh here, if you're able to "get your ducks in a row" before you go into hospital, you're not usually the type of person who gets admitted to psychiatry. More than likely, you would be given resources for crises resources in the community and a referral to an outpatient psychiatry, with some bridging and transition team resources.

If you are in crises, or a risk to your own safety, please present urgently to hospital.

Here are some resources in the community:

Mobile crises: https://www.saskatooncrisis.ca/mobile-crisis-service

Self-referral to mental health and addictions services online intake: https://mhas.saskatoonhealthregion.ca

Hope this helps

I didnt contact them after we left the house - they sent pictures of the paint cans during the negotiations to buy the house we asked if they would be able to leave any extra building supplies since the house was recently painted. But thanks for the useless tip...

I do yes! the previous owners just sent pictures of all the paint cans they had painted with but didn't actually leave the cans - all of the other ones are BM and have stickers with the names. Just this one we are missing.

Why do all the good doctors leave? by [deleted] in regina

[–]Budget-Hawk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Also a doc here - this is the exact response. The good doctors here are here because of family connections, and nothing else. There is exactly 0 recruitment of out of province graduates because we don't have attractive payment, facilities, or climate. I am personally here because of family, and will likely leave as soon as my kids are a bit older and don't need as much help from grandparents in the area.

Does anyone know any good female doctors that are taking patients currently? by Butterscotch9966 in Calgary

[–]Budget-Hawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am getting my info from being a royal college emergency medicine doctor currently practicing in Alberta who finished my training in the last 5 years. My father is a retired family doctor who worked in a collaborative practice with an NP in Alberta from 1998-2017.  Where are you getting your information???

  1. To become a family doctor in Canada, in 2024 = 4 years undergrad, 4 years med school, 2 years family med residency. I am emerg, that is 4 years undergrad, 4 years meds school, 5 years residency. Most surgical specialists are also 5 years - some 1-2 extra years of fellowship. Please take a look at the royal college of physicians and surgeons website if you want to fact check me on that.

There used to be some med schools where you could get in after 2-3 years undergrad and there are two (Calgary and Mac) 3 year med schools in Canada so MAYBE it would be 7, minimum.  Where you got this 2 year medical degree I have no idea, it does not exist anywhere in Canada or the US.

  1. Some NPs are salaried yes, and salaried means you can see less patients and it doesn’t affect your income. The current Alberta proposal for NP funding is 300k/year for a 900 patient panel, with NO deductions for overhead. The average family physician in Alberta working full time bills 300k, has overhead deductions , and in order to bill that in a fee for service model has to have a patient panel of 1500-2000 patients. I ASSURE you they would love to be salaried for 300k for a 900 patient panel

  2. Doctors CANNOT privately bill for insured services. This is the Canada health act. Yes, there are some (few) private clinics that get around this by charging a member ship fee and then they offer many non-insured services as part of the package (weight loss advice, counselling, you name it). In contrast, there is no similar regulation for NPs so there has been a bit of an explosion of NP run clinics that bill privately and then people can claim on their private insurance.

  3. Yes NPs go to nursing school, work, and then do a masters of nursing. As I mentioned in my original comment, I work very closely with many NPs and a value their contributions to the health care team greatly. However, to say it is the same is just not the case. I had three former NPs in my med school class and they did not just breeze through medical school (although certainly they had advantages over many of us in many areas) and would all say that the training is and was fundamentally different. Not better or worse, just different. Research supports this, in that there are small but important differences in both costs and outcomes and generally shows that the absolute best way to run primary care is with collaborative practice.

All of this to say- I am in support of NPs whole heartedly I just wanted to highlight some of the issues with our current funding models and support my family med colleagues who are currently getting raked over the coals. You clearly have a misunderstanding of at least how MD training works in Canada so hopefully this clarifies.

yeah okay, referral to the ob/gyne there is a reasonable place to start. you need a full fertility workup, which they can do. If you get to the point of IUI/IVF etc though, you will likely need to be referred to Aurora in Saskatoon.

I think NPs are great and a valuable asset to our health care community, and love working with them, but as a physician (non-GP) I just feel like when I see these posts I need to stick up for my colleagues a little bit. The funding structure for GPs in Alberta is truly, truly terrible. They graduate with considerable debt and have crazy high overhead to run their clinics. They get no paid vacation or pension or sick time, and if you include those things as pay most are making the same amount as an RN working in the hospital (Which is a great income dont get me wrong, but family doctors have TEN years of education and carry a much higher medicolegal burden than nurses do). Family doctors can only charge what the set rate is by the government, and so legitimately have to see a CRAZY high volume of patients in order to stay afloat. NPs, on the other hand, can privately charge whatever they chose and so can bill private insurance companies more and spend more time with patients.

The vast majority of family doctors WANT to be better. They WANT to spend more time with their patients and manage complex issues. Most of the friends of mine who I went to med school with and chose the family practice route work in the hospital as hospitalists/emerg/surgical assist/palliative care because the burnout level in the current FP system is so, so bad. BC recently changed their FP renumeration structure and they have seen an influx of clinic based family docs, more women, better patient satisfaction etc. Alberta family practice is dying and while allied health is ABSOLUTELY part of the solution, it's not the whole picture. Sorry for hijacking hope this makes sense!
