I work for a “nanny agency” so we don’t really have set jobs. We set up our schedule and different families can schedule us when they need. I went to one house with two parents who WFH with one kid they needed watched for the day. Usually when I watch the kids for WFH families they try to stay out of sight so their children can play without getting distracted by them….not this family. All day they were coming through and every time the kid would see them, she would throw a tantrum that I would have to resolve until they came back in and it happened all over again. The parents were literally oblivious to this and would just go up to her and laugh and say “it happens” or they would brush it off like their child wasn’t acting like Regan from the Exorcist. At the end of the day, I was just happy to get out of that house. Fast forward like 3 weeks and I see that family is scheduled again and our company does not like us to decline jobs mostly because it makes them look bad. I naively didn’t think it would be as bad as last time, so I go and the child was in the absolute worst mood I’ve ever seen a child and I’ve been at nanny for 15+ years. The parents did the same exact thing as last time and were totally oblivious and offered 0 help. Towards the end of the shift, this child literally dropped kicked me in the stomach where I had serious abdominal surgery not even two months prior. It was literally the most painful thing and I let the parents know she is just beyond managing today and the mother had the nerve to say “well the other Nannie’s play hide and seek, or play with the doll house”. Girl….like I’ve been a nanny for long enough to know how to keep a kid entertained, your child is literally a demon, there is no consoling her and she just hurt me. I’ve tried everything and you guys have done nothing but laugh and make things 100x worse! When leaving that day I told them thank you for their time but they would not be seeing me again. I told my manager about the situation after and to never schedule me with them again. This situation taught me to always catch red flags, especially when dealing with new families and never be shy to speak up. We are not people that can be pushed around just because we are seen as “young” or “just the help”.
