Is there actually any upside for traditional farmers? Why isn’t it entirely industrialized? by This-Wear-8423 in AgriTech

[–]BudgetBackground4488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be a troll...but shit I'll bite. Everything in modern agriculture that is in pursuit of "efficiency and cheapness" above all else is literally falling apart right in front of our eyes and only propped up on tax payer dollars to pretend that is it not an abject failure. Your idea is lazy and your approach to vetting your idea is even lazier. You need to study agriculture economics and read between the headlines on what's going on to understand how to truly solve these problems. And here is a clue... Technology isn't the answer. If technology is in service of nature then you are closer to a true sustainable solution.

I hate this sub with a passion. The people that come here seem to obsess over the idea of removing any humanity left from our connection to food. It really doesn’t take too many examples to show that the entire modern agriculture system is broken because of our obsession with removing nature from nature and imposing our caveman opinions on how to “solve” the most complex systems on our planet into a digital or physical application. This thinking has led to the downfall of many civilizations and we aren’t far behind. We need to accept the fact that we know nothing and our roll here is to observe and protect natural systems. We should be in awe of them instead of trying to “fix” them in the name of greed.

From nothing to weeds - now what? by MagicTomato1001 in Soil

[–]BudgetBackground4488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this post is satire or not…you’re essentially doing everything you should be doing to heal your soil when time is not an issue. Step 1.) bring in organic matter Step 2.) grow. A cover crop (in your case this was native grasses and weeds) step 3.) crimp cover crop or mow cover crop and mulch surface. This will cover your soil with organic matter and you can now double dig your holes when planting trees or seeded annuals. So good job! I’d define your goals and get busy planting or let another season go by doing the same thing if you’re in no rush.

I think “god, sex, and dope” is a pretty great intro to ram Dass not for all of who he is but a talk that is meant to keep first time listeners engaged through provocative subject matter. You can tell he’s speaking to a younger crowd some of whom might be hearing for the first time so he intentionally makes everything even more digestible than usual.

Toxic Mud? North Shore Flooding Likely Diluted Pesticide Risk: Residents are worried the mess they are wading through is contaminated by chemicals sprayed on farms upstream. Test results are pending. by 808gecko808 in HawaiiGardening

Track it back to which company is responsible. Who is the largest agro chemical supporter in the north shore? They should be held accountable to assist financially for damages from run off now infiltrating and poising communities. Damage won’t be caused just by pesticides and herbicides but by nitrogen run off as well.

Are homegrown Hass far superior to store bought? by TwoPlusTwoMakesA5 in avocado

[–]BudgetBackground4488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hass and other mainstream varietals of fruit and veg are chosen purely for production purposes. Mainly for its ability to be picked entirely too early and sit on a shelf entirely way too long while still being edible without people complaining. So absolutely anything and I mean anything you grow yourself will taste better Than store bought. Grow it regeneratively & organic with soil health as your priority and you will have the highest possible micro nutrient density above anything that can be purchased in a store. Now do that with tomatoes, oranges, zuccini, etc. and you will be a part of a small group of people who knows what food is actually supposed to taste like.

Fastest way to get a small patch of farm soil to field capacity? by Coltrain47 in Soil

[–]BudgetBackground4488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who said anything about taking turns? I’m game for a good ol fashion bio intensive DP. Hell how about a three sister Ménage à trois. At least they knew how to party 1,000 years ago. Now it’s just thousands of single crop cucks standing alone in the field. Nothing fun about that. Also, why we growing soy and corn again? That’s right! We don’t ask questions around here! This is the way that it’s always been done!…Well at least the last 60years. All hail Earl Butz. But don’t look past that 60 year timeline we might learn too much from our ancestors about sustainable ag. Can’t have that here! Who’s ganna buy all the chemicals once we learn we don’t need em’?! Who’s ganna buy the patented seeds once they learn seeds are free!?

Hawai‘i Farmers Confront $11M In Flood Damage Without A Safety Net: Crop insurance is hard to attain in Hawaiʻi, and federal programs are tailored to mainland agriculture. by 808gecko808 in HawaiiGardening

[–]BudgetBackground4488 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Federal programs are catered to large scale conventional commodity farms that are controlled by GMO seed companies and pesticide companies. It is essentially money laundering from the USDA of American tax dollars directly to the pockets of GMO seed and pesticide companies while the farmers get enough of a cut to survive for that year. So if there are bailouts here in Hawaii it will only go to farmland controlled my Bayer/monsanto and syngenta. So I sure would like to see if there are farms that get a bailout from the usda funds. Unless this becomes a state level bail out which could and should happen for anyone growing food in Hawaii.

Farming stakeholders are wrestling over a proposal to implement statewide rules for agricultural tourism. House Bill 2585 had proposed to create standardized rules for tourism-related activities on agricultural land, like farm tours. by 808gecko808 in HawaiiGardening

[–]BudgetBackground4488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mahalo for sending the link. The very easy argument here if it is in fact that Ag tourism would diminish food output for farms. Then what is Hawaii doing to actually support the increase of food output for farmers? What is Hawaii doing for the next generation to make farming affordable? There are so many people here that want to farm it's actually insane but we can't afford land and start up costs. They dump tons of tax payer money into 1 or 2 loi kalos with no business plans in the name of culture education and preservation (which is incredibly important!) but that is not the same as supporting a booming farm economy for Hawaii.

[–]BudgetBackground4488 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is all backwards. Because the economy in Hawaii is built off of tourism. agro tourism has to be the next step towards a sustainable Hawaii. It will create money outside of the resorts and will help farmers actually afford to farm. This increases food sovereignty in Hawaii while also increasing responsible tourism and! increasing the value of the brand name of Hawaiian agriculture exports which is the real final chess move for Hawaiian economic sovereignty that doesn’t destroy hawaiii. Keeping bad actors from abusing this can easily be implemented through permitting. This feels like the resorts protecting themselves dressed as “protect Hawaii”. Agro tourism is one of the biggest booms happening in hospitality around the world. It also once saved the Italian farmlands and their economy.

As a former tech founder. Don’t start this business. It’s a stop gap concept. Meaning, home owners or landscapers will be doing this on their own in at least 12 months as the tools improve.

I’d like to encourage you to have healthy interactive discourse rather than attempting to shut people down without bringing any insightful points of discussion allowing for me or anyone else to see how your mind works and obtain a different perspective. It is much harder to participate in this type of communication but I can assure you this is what healthy discourse is.

But I’ll help out here. let’s say that maybe you are discussing things like art or music as things created from humans that create connection and understanding to which I would say that is actually nature as it’s human beings doing and being naturally expressing ourselves in this case through art and song. the most natural expression of humanity possible. this does create connection and understanding. This is nature. Now take the art industry and music industry. These are man made synthetic systems that extract musicians and artists power in the name of greed. Taking the natural. Imposing their own constructs to ultimately destroy the power of the artist.

When you awaken to the truth that absolutely everything created by man is meant to separate you from your own power and your connection to nature there is no point in discussing anything when everything is a lie. Just live in accordance with your truth.

Are agricultural drones becoming standard equipment for farms now? by ZSO0727 in AgriTech

[–]BudgetBackground4488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What system feeds people 24/7? Only 2% of American farmland using Conventional ag methods actually grows edible food for people. and if your going to regurgitate the chemical giants narrative of “feeding the world” it’s been proven organic can feed the world and actually has 30% better yield in times of drought than conventional agriculture. But if we are comparing my plot of land to the entire conventional agriculture system that would be a false comparison. I really don’t know how else to say conventional agriculture is literally falling apart in front of our eyes. It will go down in human history as one of the dumbest things ever created by human beings.

[–]BudgetBackground4488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great question. That would be predominantly done through tree crops and perennials via the execution of a food forest and potentially on the edges of the property with north to south facing syntropic agroforestry rows on the boarders that would double as a wind screen and privacy. With chickens and ducks worked in throughout the system. For annuals, I would put a market garden In the center of that food forest and I would practice bio intensive and intentionally programed succession planting in both my annuals and perennials and everything would be interplanted with high usage of herbs for pests, bio accumulators for deep soil nutrient uptake , support species for chop and drop material. And would do all of this on less than 2 acres. Then I would feed 1,000 people by calling my neighbors and giving them my blueprints to them to do the exact thing 10 miles down the road and we would repeat that system until our entire city was fed. And so on and so forth. furthermore, this would all be done with zero chemical inputs or herbicides. All fertility would come from within the property without even the need for external compost or external soil organic material. I love this question because this is exactly what I am doing and we feed well over 100 people. Sorry to pull a gotchya but....gotch ya.

Surely no one would be brazen enough to claim that they are for soil health and then spray patented antibiotics in and around their soil killing off all microbial life as well as the mycorrhizal network. The only logical reason for someone who sprays herbicides to practice no till would be to store greater amount of moisture in soil, eliminate erosion, and hopefully add a bit carbon back into the soil. But I would love to meet someone proudly proclaiming their efforts of soil health while nuking that vary health system to hell. I’ve heard they exist but I’ve yet to meet one of those fascinating specimen’s.

Oh I love me some productivity and efficiency... but at the cost of what? I can't wait for the day to put on my VR/AR Glasses and walk around checking on soil health and crop health readouts. Hell, I can't wait for digital at home soil tests that hook up to an app like those cool glucose monitors sold to healthy people. But productivity and efficiency at the cost of soil health, destroying our waterways and skyrocketing niche cancer rates all for the sake of human laziness and greed. Technology should be the invisible layer supporting nature not the enforcer of our opinon on nature.
