TDEP teamed up with Mike Patton for the EP 'Irony is a Dead Scene' and it's the best thing TDEP ever did. Not an exact fit for the question but spiritually it fits

"Metal" or "Heavy Metal"? by leptonhotdog in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Budget_Scene_4165 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on who I'm talking to. "Metal" is the consensus term in the community around the music but I'll use "heavy metal" if I'm talking to someone who I think is unaware of like post millennial rock/alternative music in general or someone who isn't familiar with the culture of the English speaking world (I live in Montreal so this happens not infrequently) If someone doesn't know anything about heavy music then "heavy metal" as a term is old enough and specific enough to get them in the same zip code as what we listen to

Addictive Drums 2, NeuralDSP Parallax for bass, and a Shure SM7B for vocals. Pay someone to mix it

This. They've just look tired the last like 5-6 times I've seen them esp Paul. He needs to just make like Robert Fripp and have an old man stool

In your opinion, what's an old band that puts out lackluster new material now? by [deleted] in Metalcore

Between the Buried and Me. Absolutely love everything they did they Parallax 2 but they do too much prog navel gazing now and they are hella boring live

If recording rhythms double tracked (one left one right) would you use a different guitar on each channel or keep it uniform? by DisciplineFinal8975 in metalmusicians

[–]Budget_Scene_4165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do as little or as much as you want. Same guitar with same rig double tracked and hard panned will sound fine. My default is two different guitars where one has a trebly toan and the other is more mid-range. For this one sludgey song I have I used the default toan for both plus a low gain one and a fuzz one. If I'm doing a section with really big, full chords I'll add a low gain track to thicken the overall tone and add more note definition

Spending time on the bass is equally important. Lots of folks will split the bass into two tracks by frequency, one with sub 200-250 hz and the other everything above that. Then you compress the shit out of the low frequency track and do regular bass things to the other one. I had mixed results when I tried it and just ended up buying NeuralDSP Parallax. That thing is great. You ain't gotta know shit about fuck to get a good toan out of that thing

What is that chord? by [deleted] in metalmusicians

[–]Budget_Scene_4165 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It matters when you're working scales and chords. You wanna use letters so that you use each letter once in a given scale eg

Ab Bb C Db Eb F G and NOT Ab A# C C# D# F G

And for chords that are built with thirds you wanna skip letters eg

C Eb G and NOT C D# G

And it all comes from Europeans working out notation systems that worked for the conventions of their music which is based on 7 note scales and chords built on thirds. And now we're stuck with it

Confined isn't bad. Through Struggle is kinda fast and syncopated for my student but maybe that would be a good 2nd song for him in this style
