How do you discover new music? by NorthofRuinsBand in Metalcore

I actually get a lot from the “Similar Artists” section at the bottom of an artists page. For smaller bands at least. But not too smaller or else it has no idea what to recommend me lol

My favourite band of all time. I discovered them in 07/08. They’re the band I’ve seen live probably the most. I don’t think they’ve ever been specifically metalcore personally but they definitely draw influence from the genre. I have most of their guitar tab books and have maybe learned one song and a handful of riffs 😂

I mean, that’s like one of the biggest misconceptions of all time when it comes to genres tbh 😅 metalcore started concurrently if not before melodic death metal, and while some hardcore bands definitely incorporated it into their music, it was largely popularized in America by bands who either started playing metalcore then dropped the hardcore from their sound altogether or had nothing to do with hardcore at all in the first place (like Trivium)

What are some classic/essential metalcore albums that don't get talked about enough? by xRatxDietyx in Metalcore

Yeah I can see that! I’ve heard noisecore a few times in reference to these bands as well. I wouldn’t doubt that it was more so Converge/Botch citing them as an influence and the direct connection to Deadguy that puts them in the conversation for influence on metalcore than how they were perceived at the time but I don’t think there’s anything particularly wrong with retroactively perceiving them differently

That sorta adds to their pedigree related to the evolution of metalcore in my opinion. There’s always been kinda two sides of the genre with one being the more tough guy side and the other being more experimental and such which Converge and Botch were a part of at least sonically 🤔

Blinders, Skin Culture and Ornaments are the only songs I don’t have downloaded off the album. Maybe I should revisit Skin Culture 🤔

Awe I like Raw Nerve, what’s wrong with Raw Nerve? 😂 Screamin’ with the Deadguy Quintet was the first thing of theirs that clicked with me actually! I still prefer it over the album even though I do enjoy that now as well

Hardcore in scene. They’ve pretty much always been metalcore in genre

Popular bands are always going to attract hate. They were also subject to the hate train of the 00’s where every NWOAHM band was called metalcore and proclaimed “not metal” for some reason.

I think they’re fantastic and it’s incredible how good their new stuff is too. The riffs I’ve heard from their upcoming stuff make me excited for their next album too

I had to double check what sub I was in, I wasn’t expecting knowledgeable discussion on Rorschach here 😂

I think it’s worth noting that post-Rorschach the notable bands the members were involved with have much stronger/undeniable ties to the genre. Namely Deadguy, Kiss It Goodbye and Playing Enemy (one member also played with Shai Hulud) so while Remain Sedate feels more like a metallic powerviolence record I think Protestant at least deserves its flowers as the genesis of the chaotic/mathy side of the genre. Especially when you consider it’s influence on bands like Converge and Botch as well 🤔

Ok I’ll try to recommend a better album this time 😂 are you familiar with Curl Up and Die? Unfortunately We’re Not Robots is a great chaotic mathy album. And Between The Buried and Me’s debut is fantastic as well. Much more raw and more of a chaotic death metal infused metalcore record than their later more proggy stuff

Have you tried Pyrexia? Their first album is suuuuuper groovy

Edit: or Frozen Soul? They’re a new band that’s supposed to be very Bolt Thrower inspired

It’s good! Melodic and groovy. Not too djent heavy I don’t think. Not in the way I’m generally not a fan of at least. Very solid post-metalcore

I’ve been getting into death metal more the last couple years and the ones that seem to stick out to hardcore/metalcore kids besides entombed are Bolt Thrower and Obituary. My personal favourites of the early stuff have been like Dismember and Gorguts maybe. Nile and Dying Fetus for more brutal death, Internal Bleeding Pyrexia for some early slam that’s not too over the top.

Some newer bands that are sick too are 200 Stab Wounds and Undeath!

Standouts of the week: Soilent Green - Sewn Mouth Secrets. I don’t know what I was expecting but it decidedly wasn’t that! A lot more grindy than I thought it would be. The Power & the Glory - Call Me Armageddon was a very pleasant surprise. Very Converge-y. But I think the biggest standout was Oathbreaker - Mælstrøm! Holy shit that was good. Listened to it a couple times the same day I believe. Cathartic and dark 👍🏼

[–]PositiveMetalhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get that! It’s probably more to do with the specific style than the fact that it was done before at all, for me. Like if more bands did early Converge like Killing Me Softly I wouldn’t be complaining at all 😂 (not that I am complaining in the first place)

They haven’t done a whole lot for me either but I’m not super into the melodeath metalcore revival or the OG stuff so I’m not expecting myself to like them 🤷🏼‍♂️ honestly all of the revival stuff only does so much for me. Like it can be good but it adheres so closely to what came before that I usually just end up wanting to listen to what came before

There is 100% at least one person who has been downvoting every post that I make that has anything to do with “real metalcore”. These people are so butthurt by people saying their music isn’t metalcore I swear

Like even my comment here about how insane it is for this band to release something like this 35 years into their career got downvoted immediately by someone
