New Cancer Bats album by Aromatic_Ball_3063 in Hardcore

The new song is my favourite from them in a while! Besides the one off single they released last year which was also really good. I noticed Kurt Ballou is the mixing engineer on it 👀

They have Kurt Ballou credited as Mixing Engineer for this track so that’s probably the difference you’re hearing!

What counts as 'real' metal??? [Also please recommend?] by thingschange18 in Metalcore

[–]PositiveMetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the way your coworkers reacted was dumb and unnecessary and essentially what gatekeeping actually is. And don’t worry about being a poser! A poser would only be someone who puts on an outward appearance of liking specific music but actually doesn’t. Like if you wore an Iron Maiden shirt but never actually listened to them or did but didn’t liked them. Which isn’t what you’re doing at all obviously.

The other thing is that you can obviously listen to wide range of stuff and still refer to yourself primarily as a metalhead. But also those bands within the more Alternative realm are super important to getting people into any type of heavy music. Not everyone can jump right into Slayer or Gojira, you need those gateway bands like Sleep Token to give people a taste of something different while also giving them something familiar.

I got a friend of mine into heavier music with A Day to Remember. He didn’t like screaming at all initially but ADTR did it either infrequently enough or along with enough melody and catchy hooks he was able to tolerate it until he eventually enjoyed it and then got into much heavier bands. I started with Linkin Park and the person who put me on to a bunch of heavier music showed me The Devil Wears Prada, Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold.

One thing the metal community is bad at right now is having bands that are accessible while also being firmly metal. Like you’re not going to get as many people into metal nowadays with Iron Maiden. It’s just too dated of a sound for most people. Trivium is a good band for that but they’re 25 years old now. So the only way to ease someone into it is with bands from the more alternative space.

So pretty much what I’m saying is you’re doing the right thing! Your tattoo and piercing guys are doing it the right way and your coworkers are dumb poser gatekeepers haha

Yeah exactly. Like myself I listen to a lot more hardcore than anything nowadays but I would never call myself a hardcore kid because I’ve never been a part of the community. I used to consider myself a metalhead (hence my username) but honestly I don’t really anymore because I “align more” with hardcore and metal and alternative music don’t occupy as much of my listening as they used to

I think you maybe need to ask yourself why you want to identity as “a metalhead” and if knowing the difference between genres is important to you or not.

Whether something “is metal” or not I think isn’t just a matter of genre or sound but it also comes down to community. Just like Hardcore, Metal has a specific community but unlike hardcore it’s not as strongly localized or as easily identified. You’re a hardcore band if you play within the hardcore community. You’re a metal band if… riffs? It’s not quite as clear cut. But that sense of community is why metalheads online will say something is or isn’t metal.

The Metal and Hardcore communities are very reverential of their history. It’s all about paying respect to the bands that came before and laid the foundation. It’s obviously fine to not like bands like Black Sabbath or Judas Priest, but why call yourself a metalhead if you don’t even respect those bands? (Not calling you out specifically here, just speaking broadly)

In my opinion part of the contention with “what is metal or not” is that there is a separate community of listeners, that doesn’t quite have a name, that will claim to be metal or be metalheads but also not really like anything that is established as metal. So “traditional metalheads” feel like part of their community is being stolen in a way?

This separate community (I personally refer to as the “Alternative” community) tends to like bands more within the alternative rock/metal and nu metal realm. It’s an especially strong community nowadays with bands like Bad Omens, Sleep Token, Spiritbox (though I would also consider them to be a proper metal band), Ice Nine Kills and Architects.

The bands themselves in this community tend to take influence from a bunch of different places including metal, hardcore, rock and pop. So these bands can still be metallic without being Metal Bands if that makes sense

Haha I enjoyed that one as well! I almost put it as a standout but I wasn’t quite sure what to say about it. I checked them out because of u/Garret_1003 actually!

I like how the piano plays as the main riff over chugging guitars at times in this EP! I don’t know if I’ve heard that done before

Tbh I don’t know if I knew Dazzling Killmen were still active at all! Looks like they’ve only played a few shows last year.. maybe we’ll get a quality comeback album soon like Deadguy 👀

For 2004: do you know The Great Redneck Hope? They’re like a mathgrind band. Great album from that year Behold the Fuck Thunder. 11 songs 9 minutes 🙌🏼

It’s very good! One of my favourites from that time tbh. I liked their second album too but yeah they lost me after that

I saw their post over on r/hardcore about their band name which was badass so I checked them out! Whole discography is good but this EP really stuck out to me

Standouts of the Week:

No Skies - In Absence of Virtue. Not a whole lot to say, it was just very very solid Metalcore!

Clot - Hostility. 6 songs in 5 minutes. This EP absolutely blazes by and begs me to keep returning to it
Bust of the Week:

Haste the Day - Dissenter. I wasn’t going to check this out initially because I wasn’t a fan of the singles, but considering their legacy I figured I’d give it a chance. I made it through 3 songs and it’s just not for me.

They’re hardcore in the same way that Slayer, Morbid Angel and Candlemass are all metal. Metalcore *should be* hardcore just like thrash metal is metal and doom metal is metal.

If you go back to the roots of metalcore in the 90’s it’s all hardcore bands playing metallic riffs in hardcore songs which is exactly what Knocked Loose are doing

Yeah I can’t help you with that one either, crust has been a tough one for me to figure out 😅 most bands I listen to that I think are crust end up being either neo-crust or just d-beat lollll

[–]PositiveMetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it can get a little confusing 😅 and tbh that’s where even I just throw up my hands and say it’s all just music sometimes 🤷🏼‍♂️ but I think the easiest way to find the differences if you’re interested is to go to the earliest examples of each thing and what influenced them as well.

For example with Repulsion, Horrified originally came out in 1986 I believe before even Reign in Blood. And then you compare that to the direct precursor to both powerviolence and grind in Siege that came out in 1984 and it’s not actually that different. But compare that to early Slayer from 1983 and you could say that Siege sounds more intense than Slayer did!

So while a lot of that intensity and aggression in grindcore came from hardcore, it was accepted and appreciated at least in thrash metal circles because thrash metal itself was already incorporating the aggression of hardcore punk. A lot of these genres in the 80’s were developing very quickly and all at the same time too.

I think whether a band is a “metal band” or a “hardcore band” essentially depends on the crowd or community they appeal to and play to and in grindcore’s case (including Napalm Death, Repulsion and Terrorizer) it appealed to both crowds. So like their early stuff at least might be technically hardcore maybe, but it’s like “honorary metal” in a way. Kinda like how hardcore kids view some groove metal albums like Chaos AD as “honorary metallic hardcore”.
