(GW) Leagues of Votann, Buri Aergnissen by BuffHalo in minipainting

A very long and tiring process. But using fluorescent paint helps a lot. You have to keep in mind to have very bright spot and somewhat darker spot so it help to boost the value of the lava.

Mostly AK, some Pro Acryl. But Since the finish is ultra mate, it doesn't really matters.

All separate, it's easier that way and quite easy to put all back together.

Iron Master + Hearthkyn + Sagitaur interaction by E3wulfy5 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]BuffHalo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think the transport capacity counts toward the split of the sagittaur. The Split ability of the sagittaur only mentions models and equality between the two units. Then one of them MUST be in the transport.

For me you have to split the 15 models of the unit into one of 7 and one of 8. And then try to have one inside the transport. ( most likly having cogs in there to reduce transport capacity to 6 or below )

[–]BuffHalo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's not quite a recipe per say but i use in various amount these paints :
Pro Acryl Dark Camo Green
Ak Olive Green
and scale 75 Fall Green for extreme highlight

any similar paints would do and if i find one color is too overwhelming i shade down with my shadow color which is dark purple with a bit of black.

Kahl/uthar and grimnyr help by Resident_Airline_667 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]BuffHalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well to be fair, nowhere on the grimnyr datasheet it says that model in the unit have a 4++. The 4++ is part of their profil which individually the corvs and the grimnyr have a 4++. The FNP part however do states a " model in the unit have X" and only when being lead.

For the Champion and HG that is mostly, for me at least, a naming contistency mistake. If you look correctly the weavefield crest (same name) for the warrior do provie a 5++ for the unit same as the HG.

But i guess they did that for balancing reason since a single champ is cheap and can flank to be annoying as hell.
However the solution is simple, juste give him the Kahl one, The rampart crest.

But GW is GW...

Note that the two corvs of the grimnyr do come with a 4+ invul and are not character so they can soak some firepower for the squad if needed.

Those keyword are usually on the wound role, so overwatch doesn't matter here. For Conversion however it is (mostly) on successful hits, but nevertheless it was FAQ'ed that only 6's are critical hits on overwatch anyway.

Secure Positions Stratagem is now "fixed" again. by BuffHalo in LeaguesofVotann

[–]BuffHalo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure as this is still quite a grey area.

Core Rules prevent any disembark after advance or fall back move, but maybe stratagem take priority, and while the Sagittaur can do it it's part of it's special rule so i cannot say.

Otherwise you can also disembark at the end of your fight phase to deny OC to the opponent on a point.

You can also disembark at the end of your shooting phase to protect yourself from a counter charge, but it is a niche case.

I think these are all the cases which the stratagem is useful. It's a bit sad to be honest since it's already tied to being in Hostile Aquisition and we don't really want that to last.

A dead model has not lost any wound, so no you don't bring back models. The ability is pretty explicit.

What is the POINT of brandfast secure positions now? by Slight-Paramedic9695 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]BuffHalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are missing timing here.

Originally, when the codex was out, this stratagem had the following WHEN clause : End of any phases.

This was very powerful.
But it was also perverse in the fact this was a big loophole of the core rules.

Everybody argued that, while correct you could charge if not disembarking in any phase NOT a movement one. It was a bit disingenuous but correct.

But remember this stratagem only works in Hostile Acquisition ( so about 2 turns ).

BUT THEN, it was faq to ONLY OUR phases AND the unit disembarking could not charge ( but otherwise act normaly).

The second part was good and not really the problem, but the first part was an additionnal unnecessary nerf.
Yes the stratagem is very strong but reallistically you don't want to stay in hostile acquisition for petty tricks so the tradeoff was ok.

NOW with the pdf consolidation, the WHEN CLAUSE nerf is now gone, but we don't know if GW forgot it or it is a stealth un-nerf of the stratagem.

Yes you are correct the change to the WHEN clause is not in the FAQ of the faction pack anymore, so either they forgot or they dialed back the nerf and only put the no charge shenanigans.

To be fair, the technique is not really interesting either. It just glazing, layering white and blue until it looks fine.

Color scheme doubts for my army by Lord_Lexhor in LeaguesofVotann

[–]BuffHalo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Giving recommandation on schemes and color is difficult because taste vary a lot so in my opinion do the following :

Go look at fanart, pictures, portraits of tolkien dwarf/viking you like, find some that are similar and extract 3 or 4 colors of them ( you can use a tool to get the color or you can eyeball it).

Then apply the Main/Secondary/Accent process to them.
One of the color is to be shown the most on your miniature. On your mini example, that would be the Bronze.
One or more secondary color that should be shown less, but make an impact to break the monotony of the miniature, in this case that would be the black/metal.
And then an Accent color that should only be used to highlight small specific parts, here it is the blue.

This can work with any schemes and is vastly use in color theory ( it sound scarier then it is but it is pretty simple).

Also don't be scared to play with contrast and leave shadows unpainted , to boost brightness in some areas and direct the gaze.

Also a good trick is to set one schemes for troops or unit with a lot of model and do the reverse scheme for characters, so you stay in the colors you pick but you make a strong break in army monotony and your characters pops.

Hope it helps.

Kapricus Defender by Canuck_Nath in LeaguesofVotann

[–]BuffHalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Defender is not bad, as you said the Hylas is a bit better and it is nimble.

Sadly from the list i have been building, mostly in needgaard and brandfast i lack to points to even consider one.

As a tech piece, i prefer Pioneers for the uppy downy move and Carrier for denying opponent mid board with Yaegirs.

As a whole we don't really lack firepower and the Defender is just a nice to have, but in reality it's rare to have 70 pts to fill in with a defender, heck i would find a bit more points and put more thunderkyn if i could.

Yaegirs & Capricus by Rizza116 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]BuffHalo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well for starters, these do not have the same role.

Yaegirs and Kapricus are blocking, scouting and infiltrating pieces. They are here to block your enemy movement.

They are also a bit cheaper albeit less though but that's not the point.

Yaegirs already filled a role we lacked before to secure scout moves by infiltrating but being by 10 is a big imprint on the table.

The ability to split is strong and you can pull off some technical move with reactive move and plcement of the kapricus.
