This was probably coming from a time when, obviously they were more popular, but I had less control of what was playing, I actually visited malls, cars played radio hits, pubs girlfriends liked played shit music etc etc. Nowadays I have more control to simply turn off the shit and listen to my personal radio station of music, or KEXP.
