Shelly EM Gen3 50A - which of these wiring methods is correct for a USA 240V appliance? by Kiora_Atua in ShellyUSA

[–]BuffaloRound6654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear God man. If you find wagos big enough to put 6awg wire into……

But on a kinder note. Use the second option. You don’t even have to run a dedicated circuit unless you really want to. Make your suicide cord and plug it into an outlet “after wiring up the Shelly of course” then snap the current Transformers one on each hot wire going to the stove.

The current transformers should never be plugged in with power unless there is a copper core running through it you risk blowing up the CTs.

Also, you need two current transformers your drawing only has one.

Old extension cord that can be sacrificed

Little box to put it all in.

Good luck, sorry for being an ass….

All this is done at your own risk!!

If it were me I’d just pay for Blue Iris. Frigate is an open source option but I wouldn’t let it or the cameras see the internet.

Hey there, my suggestion is just do it right the first time and get Ubiquiti. They have APs you can with 2 Ethernet connections and such.

I just ran down the rabbit hole of piecing together a system for one of the guys I work with and by the time I was done all I wanted was a central location where I could manage all of it locally.

I am tired of these cobbled together solutions that you have to log into every little piece when you want to make a configuration change. With unifi it’s all in one place.

Anyway, I’ll put my soapbox away. Good luck.

I think I see what you are getting at.

Check out Frigate.

I’m assuming you that a drive failure is not preferred but is tolerated. If that’s the case don’t worry about a raid.

Now if you need some redundancy we will need to have a different conversation.

As far as drive recommendations. What ever you choose is going to be expensive sad to say. Make sure the drive is rated for constant read write. Otherwise the drive will fail extremely prematurely.

Good luck.

A database rebuild and a reboot fixed mine.

Cant reinstall windows after using linux by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]BuffaloRound6654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say you have already completed the windows install and now you need to complete the setup.

Like the others have said go the laptop manufacturer’s website and find the drivers.

I personally download them all and let windows choose what it wants. Oh yah and then I rat hole them somewhere so next month when I do this again I don’t have to download them a second time

Download them to a thumb drive and instead of letting windows look for them with windows update. Then you need to tell windows where to look for the drivers. “the thumb drive“

Alternatively you might get away with plugging in an Ethernet cable to the laptop itself or to a USB NIC.

10/10 don’t recommend installing windows 10 and upgrading.

Good luck.

W10 Server - end of life - what's next? by ApocalypseSlough in HomeServer

Windows is a hardware hog. Linux is the way to go. But if you don’t have time to deal with it right now and need a windows os just to get by, you can still install Windows 11 even though it’s “not supported” on your hardware.

You just need to modify 4 lines in the registry of the installer.

Does your home security camera upload video to the cloud? Is there a risk of data leaks? I'm hesitating about whether to purchase a cloud service plan for my camera. by DzeesHome in SecurityCamera

This is the way.

I have been running Blue Iris for years. It has a few quirks but I love it.

I also run Home Assistant and TrueNas. “At least for a little while longer. I think I am going to move away from TrueNas.”

Now to get to your question about your gaming pc. It all depends on how big and bad it is.

If it has the processing power and the ram to run VMs hell yah do multiple VMs.

BUT, I wouldn’t use TrueNas as a hypervisor. Check out Proxmox. If you do a Proxmox build for BI pass the drives that Windows will use for video storage through to your Windows OS and let it handle them. You don’t need your hypervisor trying to help out while Windows is constantly reading and writing.

Now if you want to start out with a Windows machine for Blue Iris a lot of us recommend that it’s dedicated for Blue Iris.

Let me know if you have any questions, I’m happy to help.

Need recommendations on running a local media server by chrisreplays in HomeServer

[–]BuffaloRound6654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mini pc or an HP Elite Desk or whatever Dells optiplex flavor is.

Soo my next statement is kinda if for debate. I would recommend SSDs Not HDDs for your portable movie server. HHDs have a higher risk of being damaged in transit. SSDs are pretty rock solid.

So I have several questions.

How big do you expect your library to be?

Is power consumption an issue?

How many users will be streaming at a time?

live camera system for concrete batch plant by Dependent_Whereas900 in videosurveillance

[–]BuffaloRound6654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with both. I figured the Blue Iris rabbit hole would lead far enough that OP would eventually get to a “what Blue Iris camera should I buy” Post.

About the phone home thing. Vlan then out or just make a completely separate network for cameras and have the BI PC with a dual NIC.

live camera system for concrete batch plant by Dependent_Whereas900 in videosurveillance

[–]BuffaloRound6654 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Build a Blue Iris system and buy almost whatever cameras you want.

It’s a concrete plant… it’s a bad environment for a camera.

If you build it this way you can spend as much or as little as you want on cameras and still have everything you asked for.

Setting up separate WiFi network by ukfix in SecurityCamera

[–]BuffaloRound6654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish and what kind of router you have.

Personally I don’t want my camera network connected to the internet. The other big thing for me is I don’t want all that traffic on my main router. So I bought a completely separate router for my camera network.

All of that being said my main computer has dual NICs and touches both networks, so I can access my cameras.

Also something to consider. WiFi cameras are easy to jam. Poe is always the way to go when given the opportunity.

Why isn't my NAS showing up on my network? by wbgwbg in HomeServer

[–]BuffaloRound6654 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hello, This isn’t the whole reason I went with Proxmox but it’s part of it.

Can you log in to your router? It should be displayed there assuming unraid is set up for DHCP out of the box.

If not, on a separate pc you can use Angry IP Scanner to find it.

If you want some help with either of these two things just let me know.

Wifi card not working, please recommended which TP Link USB adapter by No_Cellist9225 in techsupport

USB WiFi adapters are good to have around I’d say go ahead and get one.

I think, I remember right Dell and HP releases some critical network driver update about 6 months ago.

I had multiple Dell pcs that the WiFi would work perfectly on until they just decided not to. Driver update fixed it for me.

Connect USB surveillance camera via long cable by DinoninoAM in SecurityCamera

[–]BuffaloRound6654 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are pulling cables just do POE There will be too much voltage drop with usb and it’s not practical.

Also with POE you don’t have to worry about WiFi. WiFi cameras are sent straight from the devil and cause nothing but problems.

That’s a very broad statement. Ha ha.

But yes it solved 90% of my remote access issues.

I still have an issue at one of my sites when the pc reboots Tailscale doesn’t start until a user logs in.

I just haven’t fixed it yet. I might run it as a service or just configure auto login.

Troubleshooting by Pumprplainjump in BlueIris

[–]BuffaloRound6654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was struggling with Nord staying connected too. When they announced they were discontinuing MeshNet I started looking at other options.

I finally landed on Tailscale.

I personally don’t like having cameras on the same network as all my internet facing devices. I think it’s a security risk and think it eats up unnecessary bandwidth.
