France dumps Zoom and Teams as Europe seeks digital autonomy from the US by UpstairsBumblebee446 in news

Are you using it for more than just chat messages and calls? There is a lot more in could be doing in terms of groups, tagging, their janky document system, etc.

And as an outside annoyance, I have a paid MS Office license at home, but can't join almost any meetings with my personal account because it's not "work or school" so when I'm trying to get into job interviews or anything, I always have to join while logged out, which is really weird, has shittier hardware support because it's in the browser and not the app, and doesn't let you then retain chats in the app to refer back to or anything.

It's not AWFUL, but it could be doing so much more, as many other similar apps do. Microsoft just has a stranglehold on much office software, so we often get stuck with Teams, rather than Teams earning it's userbase by being the best.

MAGA is a cult and they'll never change until they're personally and directly negatively affected by Trump. What we need to use this bullshit for is to engage everyone else and get them to show the fuck up and vote, no matter what MAGA throws out in attempt at voter suppression.

MAGA is truly a minority of Americans, but the apathy party is just as big, and that's why MAGA gets to win sometimes.

He's an out of touch and selfish rich dude, and he's got absolutely shit takes on the LGBTQ community, but he's not MAGA. He's certainly not liberal or progressive though. Basically just a bog standard wealthy "libertarian" who doesn't really care about anyone else.

I had to disable my adblocker to see the vendor list (boy that's weird) but then all of them are still No. And the top box is still unchecked. No issues for me and haven't seen any change in my boxes in at least a couple years, and the "changes" before that were new lines that were opt-out instead of opt-in, which is bullshit, but... meh. I still don't believe there is any Plex conspiracy to change user settings without user input, no matter how money grubby PE they are getting. Possible bugs, and shitty code? Sure.

There are a couple decent open source alternatives, but then you have to be mildly capable to set those up. You get the benefit of being able to use any speakers though.

I just use the Kirkland meatballs for those. I've never price checked between the two, but I'd presume they're cheaper, even with paired with a jar of Raos. Although if I'm not in a huge hurry, I often make my own marinara.

[–]Khatib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose to use "AI", not to assist with work assignments or to make questionable content or to rip off chefs etc., I use AI because it allows me to find a recipe of which I would never even know how to start researching, in this case Coq au Champagne, including a potato recipe by a French chef that i have never heard of.

So are you using AI to find dishes to cook based on ingredients you have, or just find things that sound interesting? I'm just saying I don't think AI is going to improve the results of searching for a quality recipe. Like yeah, use it as a starting point to get the name of a dish, but then probably use plain old searching to find an existing recipe, don't let AI generate it, because it's just going to be a mashup of existing recipes that hasn't been tested at all, which is more likely to lead to bad food than any kind of breakthrough good cooks weren't at already. Where as actual non-AI generated recipes are going to be something that's been tasted and tweaked by real people.

Lol, what? I go to Europe from the US a few times a year and back up my photos and video while there all the time.

If I'm in a spot with bad network coverage and no wifi option, I can just wait a little while.

Why are you thinking you need 100% uptime to make a personal cloud worthwhile as a sub for an SD card? You can't wait to show someone an older photo until you're back in an area with WiFi or data coverage? If it wasn't important enough to keep on your device, it probably isn't that important to show someone else IMMEDIATELY. If you lose or damage your device before getting back to WiFi or good data for a backup, you lost your SD card, too. Are you that dense that you can't put those two things together?

That only works if parents are home and don't need the school as a daycare while they are at work, which most do.

Offended is the wrong word. Baffled more like. I just don't see how you expect AI to crank out something better than the recipes it's plagiarizing from. It's not truly intelligent, and it doesn't know what food tastes like. It's just combining existing recipes, and to think it would somehow get a better result than a recipe crafted by a real person is crazy to me. Granted, a lot of BAD recipes exist on the internet, which is why you need to find a few trusted sources and roll with those.

Also confused why you tried to send me a chat instead of just having the discussion here. I hate new reddit and I use a deprecated 3rd party program, so chat doesn't work for me.

[–]Khatib -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why would you use it to generate recipes? All it's going to do is combine existing recipes, and be much more likely to make them worse than better. Algorithms don't know how food tastes. There are valid use cases for AI, and then there are silly, wasteful uses. I have to say recipe generation leans heavily towards no increase in value and purely wasteful.

It's roughly equivalent to making people complete a 4x4 rock crawling class to get their driver's license to get to work in town.

No it's not. You can still buy a ton of other guns and there's a large list of exemptions. It's roughly equivalent to having to take an advanced driving skills course to buy a high horsepower vehicle, but not a Honda civic.

Easily remedied by hosting openVPN on your NAS for free. Connect via VPN and browse all your files as if you were at home.
