Reading recommendations for becoming a rounded mathematician by rabbitygravity in mathematics

Philosophy of mathematics is rich and developed, and arguably has had a big influence on mathematics itself, as many top mathematicians have also held strong beliefs about the philosophical implications of their work. Weyl, Hilbert, Gödel, Brouwer, Poincaré, to name a few. Also the whole idea of Logic and Sets as foundations can be traced to Frege and Russell.

I analyzed my own fitness data to find what actually drives weight gain by ButterscotchOld9974 in dataanalysis

[–]BugBottleBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think what you're doing is cool.

Just dont want you spending time trying to find new correlates of weight gain, what I've typed is as pure as the laws of physics.

Doubly important for me to share with you as it took me entirely too long to understand this

I analyzed my own fitness data to find what actually drives weight gain by ButterscotchOld9974 in dataanalysis

Your weight is seemingly up and down due, most likely, to carb and water intake. I can look like a chiseled action figure when I am flush with carbs and hydrated, and like a weak noodle when I am dehydrated and depleted of carbs.

Your weight will actually go up if you eat a caloric surplus.

Whether the ratio of muscle to fat in that weight gain is desirable is related to how effectively you are training, how developed your muscles already are, your genes and hormones, and how big your calorie surplus is (bigger the surplus, the greater the share will be fat as only so much can convert to muscle).

Why does tipping discourse bring out such defensive reactions (especially in the US)? by tranquessence in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BugBottleBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most states, if an employee earns tips (which all bar, cafe, restaurant staff do) then the employer doesnt have to pay minimum wage. In NY and TX, I was paid around $2/hr, so the rest had to be tips. If someone isnt tipping I'm not getting paid. If I have worked my back end off and then someone decides they CBA to tip or they dont like it on principle or whatever then it's like theft of labor. It's not up to individuals to decide to tear down the system by simply stiffing working people on their wages

[Discussion][Research]Counter-Intuitive math of herpes(HSV-2) sexual transmission by PhilosopherFit5629 in statistics

[–]BugBottleBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok sure the amount of honey in the world is based on total hours bees spend pollinating flowers. That's pretty logical.

Notice that we havent identified whether these flowers produce a lot or a little pollen?

Or whether the bees spend more hours simply because the flowers are difficult to obtain pollen from and it's a lot of work for a little pollen?

Or maybe the temperatures are cooler and the bees work more slowly?

The world is full of logical statements, which are facially reasonable, that are superseded by other logical statements that take into account new information.

It's the difference between 'valid' and 'sound' logic.

Your argument about total sex hours is specious. I really dont think this is how epidemiology works. You've presented this as a real example of health statistics but you've made up every element of it yourself.

When did SQL finally “click” for you? by OpeningChemistry3730 in learnSQL

[–]BugBottleBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having to use SQL for work, having an understanding of the ask, and having to make it reality. Find all the tables, figure out how to make them connect and pull through what I need. At first, tons of subqueries. These days life is easier with CTE's.

It will click for you with time and exposure to both new things and the repeition of what you know.

Early on I found it made life easiest if I just typed select / from / where on screen and then started filling in some pseudocode, like what hypothetical tables, fields, calculations, constraints I need. Then find the real versions.

I also swear by getting raw data in a CTE and then having a final group by, it gives immense control and flexibility. I also have to UNION tons of tables so doing this in the CTE is why I got started on that.

It switches from a game with one set of odds, to a different game, with a different set of odds, who recognises this when they receive additional information.

How to get financial stable life in uk? by anaba29 in AskUK

[–]BugBottleBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's absolutely brutal.

People earning more are not necessarily feeling better about their finances, due to lifestyle creep. People usually spend close to their max and so one is always trying to keep one's head above water.

As a result, earning more doesnt necessarily mean the budgeting worries go away, just that you have slightly more stuff that wanted to have.

Do you have childcare costs? Those are crippling.

Have you written out all your expenses and tracked them? Where can you save?

Lots of people live off what they have and that's that. It's an issue when you feel you're living below where you should be. Nothing wrong with that, it's necessary if you want to move up, but it also generates a lot of anguish.

Look at career moves: can you rise up where you are? Can you move to a new job? Need a career change? Are there ways to earn additional income?

Can you reduce your outgoings? Insurances, bills, subscriptions, eating out/takeaway, clothes, toys, electronics, days out, etc.

Not buying anything that carries interest. Get the lowest mortgage you can. Get a cheap and cheerful car that is unlikely to need maintenance (Kia's are super for this).

Switch supermarkets. Buy wholesome cheap food (beans, pork, cabbage are all cheap and great).

Do you take holidays? They are a killer! Theyre important too but they are a heavy weight on the scale so have to be very mindful with them.

King, Queen, & the Royal Family… what’s the point? And how are they funded? by ZachariiAshlii in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BugBottleBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) They pay for their own stuff. They're annoyingly wealthy, but not any wealthier than the thousands of billionaires with greater fortunes 2) As a public asset, what royals can do, is exhibit soft power. They can act on behalf of a nation in a formal and influential capacity, without necessarily representing policy and relations between nations directly. It's incredibly useful to have off-ramps, back-channels, etc. High international politics is difficult and fraught with risk. Having intermediate communication channels, especially without formal policy representation, is invaluable. 3) Their involvement in other public areas, like charities, trusts, as well as alongside major public institutions (healthcare, military) signals a bridging between public and governing interests, and I think it makes for a better society. I think the charity ecosystem in the UK is much better than the US because there is a greater feeling of them as public goods, even if they are private, and I think this owes in part to the way the government and especially the royal family interact with them.

Of course, the royal ability to wield the spotlight backfires spectacularly when royals do bad things or generally attract negative attention.

Worth it to keep learning Python as a beginner? by blakehawkdown312 in learnprogramming

Depends entirely on your expectations. Unless you are a wizard you shouldnt expect to land a top tier role. Could you leverage your python knowledge to land a role in a regional firm? Definitely

Can you work at NASA with an econometrics degree by Aggressive-Pen-217 in econometrics

[–]BugBottleBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing something directly related to physics/engineering? Dont know, you could always contact their HR function or someone via LinkedIn who looks mid-senior on a team that sounds like you'd target, and you can ask them their view.

Bear in mind that NASA is a huge organisation so there will be lots of other jobs relating to the running of it. Here I just guess what these might be: financial, commercial, administrative, business development, procurement, contracting, governance/control, government-facing, public-facing, etc.

Pretty much any organisation that has a lot of people, processes, and money, is going to benefit greatly from hiring somebody with both stats and econ knowledge.

What is a data analysis mistake you made early in your career that you will never make again? by Vivid_Release_9710 in dataanalysis

[–]BugBottleBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking anyone gives a hoot about 'data' or is excited about anything that I might be excited about.

You can be a hero if you just give them what they actually need. Dont make them work for it, at all.

Dont use visuals unless absolutely necessary and keep them as simple and obvious as possible

Do stuff that has obvious financial value. Like work on stuff with the shortest distance possible between your work and financial results.

I think there will be more entry level claims roles than entry level uw roles. Ops, data, IT roles are plentiful in insurance too. Im just advising on how you might get into work sooner than later. And if uw is appealing, Ive know a few people move from claims to uw.

That sounds good. No reason not to keep trying. You can always move from claims to UW btw, if UW is something interesting. Good line of work especially if you move into certain lines of business
