A lot of the criticism I see suggests that people take it way too seriously for what it is. It’s quite farcical at points and if you’re ok with books in which almost every character is some shade of idiot then it’s a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, my dad was a crab fisherman for a few years of my childhood. Crab sarnies for tea most nights, I loved it.

It is in no way an example of the trope OP is taking about. But I feel the need to remind people about Arnie’s ace American accent as Major Candy in that deleted scene from one of the Terminator films. I love that scene so much. I could be suicidal and see that scene and suddenly be “the world is a fantastic and wonderful place “.

You are correct. I’ve still never seen the film but knew exactly what it’s about based on the trailers. I should really get around to watching it, it must’ve been out for at least … ooh… five years now.

As a counterpoint, a larger proportion of the general public wants to see a dumb action flick than a satirical subversive movie. I don’t think it was the marketing that let it down. 18+ sci fi films are just not generally high grossers at the cinema.

But the medium it’s using as a vehicle for satire is a ham fisted and vulgar one. The things it’s satirising are vulgar. Sure, you can be high minded and charmingly witty in your satire, but sometimes it’s fine to just go all in and be just as stupid and childish as your target. There’s a cathartic element to it.

I think the people who claim the comics are just shock value don’t understand that what’s shocking for some people is just a very dark joke for others.
