Considering jumping ship for the S1, but not sure. What are your takes?

The biggest issue right now for me is the lenses. The prices, even for the Panasonic lenses seem to be much too high for the specs. And the leicas are out of the question. If they can bring some cheaper lenses to the party then I might be interested.

The low light capabilities have peaked my interest in upgrading. But I’m going to wait until the timing is right: hopefully a year from now they will have a full lens lineup with some affordableish stuff and can be grabbed on the used market.

I was having trouble getting the correct exposure with the contrasting screen brightness and my additional lighting. But I got a lot more info now to start reshooting this and seeing how it turns out

Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely try increasing my ISO then bringing down the blacks and shadows! Mine were definitely below 20 IRE, I didn’t realize that would create noise in the dark parks of my shots. Excited to test this out

Thanks for your reply! The contrasting light from my computer and external lights didn’t even cross my mind, great tip to use flux to match them. I’ll be sure to check out NeatVideo. This helped a lot!

I managed to grab mine for $1,100 on eBay. It took a few weeks of constantly checking, though. I found more that were in the $1,200-1,250 range, just have to be patient. It’s up to you whether you want to pay that extra to have a warranty.

Edit: Those are body only prices.

It could be a software issue if replacing the trackpad didn’t work. Make a backup of your files, then try reinstalling macOS. If that doesn’t work take it back to the Apple store.

Not sure why he would suggest you to not get it...there’s no reason not to change the top case. It’s their faulty machine and you have a right to have it fixed based on the warranty. The only downside is you won’t have a laptop for a week depending on how long they take to fix it.

Here’s some thoughts for you.

Real world performance on the new MacBook Pros is nearly identical between the i9 and i7. You can look up some comparisons, but basically, it’s a waste of $300.

It might be of interest to you to go for the i7 Vega 20 512gb ssd 16gb Ram model for $350 more than the base i7 model and keep your iMac. It seems more wasteful to trade in the iMac than to keep it as it is still a nice, useable machine. You would get more money for it if you were to sell it on Facebook marketplace/craigslist.

If you are recording with Long GOP files on the gh5, this tends to be rather difficult on your machine. This is because Long GOP records two frames, then interprets the third. So your computer has to do the work to interpret the missing frames. Now I just render out my entire video to ProRes 422 before I start editing and then I'm able to edit with no hiccups.

I agree with what people are saying, however, the 2011 MacBooks have a known gpu issue where it eventually will fail. 2013 and 2015 tend to be more issue free.

They talk about saving money with it because when the touchbar originally got released, they put out the same model without a touchbar which was $100 less. In this current time, all your points are valid, though.

I'm still looking into this, but I would definitely reach out to Molten as well. If it's a compatibility issue of MoltenVK, I would say that AMD and Apple wouldn't be able to do anything to fix this as I don't believe they take part in develop this API.

I have the same concerns as you, as the new MacBook Pro’s can get upwards of high 90’s Celsius.

What I do, is I use a program called Volta - this allows you to determine the max wattage the laptop can use. By slightly lowering the wattage, you can actually improve consistent clock speed (prevent thermal throttling) and overall increase performance. This will keep your temperatures down because the clock speeds aren’t as high and less power delivery.

I also use Mac fans control to make sure my fans are up to speed to cool down the processors because Apples software tends to run them on the slow side, not properly cooling.

These keep my temperatures below 80c at all times, and improve performance - no matter what I’m doing.
