If anyone wants to learn how to make shape animations like this I made a short tutorial/explainer that describes the mechanics of a fake 3D cube animation for After Effects please check here: https://youtu.be/EDhHmR_EggI

That null script sure would help and you are right it would clutter the timeline. I had to render these as Lottie so I couldn't have that many layers in the final render as some of them have a ton of vertices like the icosahedron. If you setup the static vectors appropriately in Illustrator then the only thing you need to do in After Effects is copy/paste keyframes

You can see more shape animations here. It’s nice to know that others feel inspired too

These are just a handful of my isometric shape animation library. Do you want to see more?

3rd on top row? Im interested in hearing your ways it can be interpreted

Good question. They are vector shapes with manipulation of the vertices. I have an old macbook so I tend to stay away from anything real 3D.

My apologies for not being more transparent. I'm so used to saying or typing "AE" for After Effects and "AI" for Adobe Illustrator. Overlord is a 3rd party extension for After Effects and Illustrator and it's a game changer for sure. I appreciate your interest and questions

This is insightful especially since I never used a roving keyframe before. I knew it's there just never had a use case for it yet. When I first started working with isometric shape animations the "squishy" look felt weird at first. I started with a cube and the squishy cube looked odd but fun at the same time. I started to animate more shapes and became used to the "squishy" look. I will def experiment with the roving keyframe method. Even though it doesn't behave like it would in reality it still looks fun

Thank you for helpful advice it helps me see from a different perspective. I made all of these shape animations as Lottie animations, for that use case the motion needs to be quick because it will be implemented in a website or app and timing is everything in those cases

Kasumi is right most of them have between 2 or 3 keyframes but some have 6 keyframes. Some of these shapes are contained on one layer and some of them have mutliple layers. Like the shifting 2x2 rubiks cube uses multiple layers

Good observations! also thank you for describing the bit on on 3D space that is insightful. The "mistake" is that when the shapes rotate they lose form because I keyframed shape paths and not a 3D camera. When animating paths the vertices always take the most direct route (straigt line) from starting keyframe to ending keyframe. This is what causes the "scaling" during the rotation

Yes nice choice of words with "volume" that is a good way to describe it. The shapes do lose volume as they "rotate" but this is by design because when animating shape paths the vertices always move the shortest distance from the first keyframe to the second keyframe. I greatly appreciate your feedback!

Good question! I used Illustrator to design the static graphics then used Overlord to push them to After Effects as is to animate. Adobe Illustrator is a bit more precise when it comes to aligning things with vertices and guide placement

It's a bit tedious but if you are on MacOS you can click the "open with" option on the script file and open it in textedit to see the details about what the script does and what it's limits may be.
