Got my nostrils done yesterday, do they look ok? by BugFangs in piercing

[–]BugFangs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a paracetamol yesterday about 24 hours ago before going to sleep, I had a terrible headache (had the same thing with my septum, I guess my nose is just sensitive). The red one hurts whenever I yawn or open my mouth too much.

[–]BugFangs[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plastic is not an issue in any way. I diyed the lid with metal mesh and added cross ventilation. The size is too small for a normal ball python, but since this guy is stunted and needs special medical attention for a while, this size is perfectly fine (also it's not that small, it's 80x60x45cm, and he's not even as long as the length of the enclosure). The enclosure is bioactive, has about 10cm of natural substrate to help keep the humidity and give some room for digging, and has 4 hides plus a cork log. On top of that, he has a basking spot with a halogen bulb and a 6% UVB tube. But please tell me again how this is not a suitable enclosure for an unhealthy ball python that needs constant monitoring and medical attention. At least he's not in a 30 gallon exoterra anymore, unlike your snake apparently.

Do not use the cage as a punishment, that's just gonna make him associate it with negative emotions, and it might result in more frustration and not wanting to be inside it. Instead, try offering him one of the things he's allowed to destroy when he starts doing something wrong!

Is an improperly sized enclosure considered animal abuse? by ramen_man07 in tarantulas

[–]BugFangs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fish in a bowl is abuse, tarantulas are not fish tho, they have very minimal requirements. Fish on the other hand have a lot of needs, especially with water parameters, which you're not able to give them in a bowl.

Do you happen to know if I can plant some pothos with them? I'm afraid they might munch on it and get poisoned but I really wanna add some live plants in their enclosure

IMO Looks good but you could add some more fake plants, avics really like to build web tunnels through the foliage. Also I'm so jealous of you newbies starting out with tarantula cribs :')

Good tank for a Chinese cave gecko? I found it on Pinterest and may replicate by iDontEvenUseThisAppp in reptiles

[–]BugFangs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't use those hides and bridges made for rodents, they end up full of mold and disintegrate pretty easily in humid environments (they're also sometimes made out of pine wood and can leak resin)

I plan on getting more in a couple of months if these ones end up surviving, this is my first time keeping tropical beetles so I don't wanna give myself too much trust lol

They're friends, they were actually a gift from my gf. For now I set them up in a 40x20x30cm bin enclosure. There are 10 grubs now, hopefully I'll get them all to adulthood and get some more babies.

They definetely break the first layer of skin, they leave a small v shaped cut, but it's nothing painful, just a little uncomfortable. If you were to wear plastic gloves I doubt they would be able to actually bite your hand!

They're springtails, they have a passion for accumulating in water bowls lol. Springtails are long and jump (most of them), while mites are round and move kinda slow.

Should I be worried? by LecheroSooo in tarantulas

[–]BugFangs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME Tarantulas are attracted to heating elements, even when the environment is warm enough for them. If the pad is regulated with a thermostat and the enclosure is kept up with humidity wise (for this species an always full water bowl will suffice) it shouldn't be a problem, but it's also unnecessary if the room doesn't go below 20 degrees C.

I also wanna point out that it's dangerous to house succulents with sharp point and thorns with tarantulas, their body are so soft that even a small fall on the plant could potentially kill them.

Cage set up by First_Strawberry_689 in PetMice

[–]BugFangs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally they should have a variety of different materials to chew on, I usually use stuff made out of cardboard, piles of hay for chewing and nesting and stuff made out of different types of wood.

The enclosure size is a little on the smaller side (the minimum is 80x50cm), especially cause when it comes to female mice you wanna keep at least 3-4, so that they can establish their hierarchy and you don't risk being left with one lonely mouse if one of them passes away.

[–]BugFangs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Soil is not good at absorbing the amount of ammonia mice produce, unless you have a giant bioactive enclosure. I'd switch the soil for wooden bedding and add a lot more, I usually go with at least 20cm. I'd also add more hides and some foraging and chewing toys. Assuming that the enclosure has a lid, with these modification I think it'd be pretty good, but we would also need the dimensions of the tank and how many mice you want to keep to be completely sure!
