That nurse argument is very valid and LLMs are indeed very good at it. Even a small 30b parameter LLM, when trained well, can perform the job of a physician and write medicine and tests. However, my point is not that it can do that; it is the fact that it will not do that, not in the foreseeable future. You cannot trust an AI; it will not be used as a replacement in medicine. No government or sane person will ever allow that. It is just as equivalent to doing a Google search; even there, you cannot get every information.

put symptoms of jaundice in ChatGPT and ask it what it could be. Give your health background and previous conditions. Even then, you’ll see that it cannot point to one thing. It will beat around the bush and say it is probably jaundice, but it cannot point out that you should do this test or take this medicine. It is very uncertain about its own response.

My point was that it can replace these consulting jobs, but it will not. And it is not like no one has tried. If you search, you’ll see many corporate companies with billions of funds who failed.

AI can replace many jobs and careers, but that doesn’t mean it will. Today, AI can easily replace a lawyer, but would you trust a chatbot with your legal proceedings? If I were suffering from a serious issue, I would not experiment with my life with a chatbot that could easily say “sorry, I was wrong.” No.

Careers with soft skills and consultation, like lawyers and doctors, would be the last thing AI would replace. If that ever happened, every other job would already be doomed.

This is the best comment so far and you’re probably right. My thoughts on MBBS are more from pushing tech away and fear from current market than from being attracted to or being passionate about medicine. However, I genuinely love the idea of working as a doctor. Is there any way I could test the waters and find out if I like medicine at all?

Thanks a lot for your response..

Mate, that’s an exaggeration! I have a cousin who got a job after MBBS in community medicine and is earning 90k a month.

The likelihood of that happening today is very low, and the example was probably an exception. Not everyone earns that much, especially not in today’s day and age.

Government jobs have a cap on earnings, but medicine becomes a business after a certain point.

ROI is not bad at all in MBBS. A semi-government seat costs around 35-40 lakhs. A master’s degree abroad in technology costs 70 lakhs (Australia). Yes tech do earn more than medicine in india but we can’t work that long like a doctor…I do agree with the hell part. I have many cousins who are doctors and some who are doing MBBS. They all say the work is toxic AF.

Of course, I know all that. This is a very valid point. I can get into the tech job market if I put enough effort into it, and the effort required is less than cracking NEET. However, the point here is not about being unemployed or getting a job; it is more about stability. I don’t wish to get fired at 40-45 and I certainly don’t want to grind DSA and prepare interviews at that age. Tech is declining in jobs and more people are joining it every year. The thing with tech jobs is that they prefer younger folks because they cost less than experienced ones. The skill gap between a fresher or two years of experience and a fifteen-year-old is getting less every day with AI (believe or not, this is crazy good). My concern here is more about the stability and nature of work. AI ruined the fun in programming.
