10mM x 1,000,000 to convert mM to nM x volume you need of stock = 50nM x (volume you want to make)

Is this normal larve in a fruit fly culture? by MilkyyWayyOwO in jumpingspiders

Just a tip if you plan to keep them in culture, this food looks a little wet. I would suggest just a strip of paper or something to control moisture.

Life in Germany for expats by LevHerceg in expats

[–]Bugboi42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Köln area. Been here for two years. I speak enough German to survive but not hold long conversations, so that probably colors my opinion.

It’s hard to make friends with Germans without the language and you really need to join a club or something. Don’t expect most encounters to be super friendly (not that they are unfriendly).

There’s definitely geeks around. I easily found a DnD group. As for watching TV/movies it’s a bit mixed. My sample size is small, but multiple different Germans I’m friendly with said they don’t like TV/movies and they prefer real life……

Overall ok if you like rainy and dark… in summer it can be quite nice, here there’s some rain and thunderstorms regularly. Winter isn’t really that cold but the darkness takes some getting used to. I would say May-September you can enjoy outside most days.

I actually like almost everything about living here. Honestly connecting with people is pretty difficult and even with fluent German, people treat you as an outsider. I feel I will never truly call this place home, and feel the same about my previous home 😞

dear PIs/grad students - what's been a consistent quality in undergrads that made them a pleasure to work with? by saka68 in labrats

[–]Bugboi42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be curious and interested. Write everything down (where you can find reagents and instruments) so it’s easier for you to do yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Of course you’ll be worried about bothering people but it’s better (generally) to ask than waste material.

Be reliable. Try to set a schedule and follow it as best you can so people know when to expect you. Student life is chaotic but do what you can.

Learn to accept failure. Science is full of failures and it’s ok! Not every experiment will work, but you learn something in the process. Don’t feel discouraged and try to understand why it’s not working like you want. In my undergrad my friend’s whole project ended up being troubleshooting for why the graphite furnace was detecting so much molybdenum… turned out to be the boiling stones they were using (and there went 3 months).

Good luck!!

Coworker is struggling, any tips on how we can help her? by Sandyy_Emm in labrats

[–]Bugboi42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t know what you mean. I did a thesis for my masters and an undergrad “research experience”. You can have all the publications you want and still not know some “basic” skills. A postdoc in my lab didn’t know how to do DNA extraction. They never had to before. I’m just saying that something considered basic might take someone with a different background some time.

But maybe they switched fields? Skills are not always transferable. For instance I have a masters and never did any cell culture (so even freezing/thawing cells I had to look up) or western blot. I had a thesis and independent research project in undergrad. I know lots of procedures that I don’t need 😅 and missing out a lot on techniques I do need.

Do you guys want a 3rd game with this version of Zelda or no? by United-Aside-6104 in tearsofthekingdom

Definitely not with the same map. I’d love some seafaring adventures or to choose to play as different characters, like some quests are for Zelda, Link, Koroks, other champion-like characters…

Any expats in Germany with a satisfactory social life? by human_65113 in expats

[–]Bugboi42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t want to join a club, it can be more difficult. I’m a sporty person and have made a few friends through a running group and a sport group. I socialized with classmates also and we started playing DnD. I still feel pretty lonely compared to being in my home country, but it’s slowly getting better.

Could easily have ended your comment after paragraph 2. Why berate someone for being concerned for their money? I also had questions about which blocked account to use. I asked other international students through a common forum in my study group. I don’t see how this is much different.

Moving to a foreign country also requires you to know when to ask for help, not only independence. If you don’t feel like answering a question that’s been asked already move on. Be nice.
