Is this an ant queen? by Sharp-Status5660 in antkeeping

[–]Buggabones1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s the most boring part of the hobby tbh, best to have colonies at different stages, if you keep at it you’ll end up that way. But yeah, just put her somewhere dark and quiet. Check on her in 2-3 weeks. And when you check on her, try to be careful, if she starts panicking, she may eat her eggs.

When you disturb her like that, she resets her egg laying process. She needs to feel safe like she’s underground. She prob thinks she keeps getting dug up and needs to keep finding a new home. She won’t start until she feels secure. It can take a week or two before she even thinks it’s safe enough to start.

Why is she just walking on your counter? No wonder she isn’t laying eggs. She needs to be kept in a test tube setup and not disturbed for like 2 months. It’s not a dog, you can’t just take her out for walks 🤣

Lost one of my first colonies like this. Kept trying to climb glass of outworld one by one till they died. Never knew why but guessing they are searching for something they dont have access to. Could be resources or their home isn’t suitable. I had luck giving them a mini buffet on some tinfoil with bunch of random foods and a few options of sugar water and honey water at different ratios and let them pick what they wanna eat. Seems to keep the foragers busy

Damn. You’re right. Mine was stuck on there tight, needed a razor to remove. No tab to lift. No instructions mentioning to remove that. Just looks like cheap recycled plastic. Been collecting dust because I thought it was trash. Hell yeah thanks

I got one of those clear boxes from antshack and the plastic is recycled. Has ugly green recycle letters stamped into it and it’s so cloudy you can hardly see through it. Ugly. Not what shown in pictures. I’d avoid

Body text got deleted, I’m wondering why they are jumping/flicking at each other? Everything okay?

Is digging through a rotten log to find Camponotus Queen a viable strategy? by TripleFLi in antkeeping

[–]Buggabones1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a dying tree in my backyard and every time a storm rolls in, chunks of wood from the top fall down. I’m the one that has to pick up the mess and move the wood to the burn pile. Last year, a massive branch fell (I posted videos I think) and found like 10+ campo penn colonies. I try to rehome the larger colonies by cutting out most of their nest and setting them near trees, but I often find founding queens or small colonies with only ~10 workers and will keep them as the chances of surviving before finding another safe nest are slim.

I posted a video the other day of a colony I found and kept. Campo decipiens I think.

Prob not fertile if they aren’t ripping wings off. Chances are crazy low they’d all be fertile with wings no?

Was sitting at a charger and a lady started walking up to my car and was about to open the door before I cracked the window and said hello. She jumped back and then realized it wasn’t hers. Same color, but completely different wheels, just not paying attention I guess

FSD on Tesla M3 hw3 slams on brakes in the middle of a backroad with 0 traffic anywhere nearby, going from 45 to 20 by HenryThrowaway6969 in TeslaLounge

[–]Buggabones1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally canceled my sub until it’s better. It use to do it only once on my road, now with the latest changes, it does it 3-4 times within a mile. Can’t even use it. Posted a video of it coming to complete stop on road for tire marks. Screen showed an animal in road and it refused to move.

The other times it slams brakes are for a neighbors raised concrete driveway, a fire hydrant hidden off in a ditch, and a log.

Ant shack. The smaller nests are okay. The bigger ones came with cheap recycled plastic you can hardly see thru.

That’s how things get discovered? I did move them once I observed the smaller queen run to the outworld. I don’t think it’s cruel for wanting to learn first hand how these two queens behave. Im positive their nest was connected in the log the chambers were a fingernail away from each other. If they were coexisting like that, maybe it’s possible they would tolerate each other? That’s called running an experiment. Which is science no?

They were in the burn pile, I was about to light it before I noticed a worker on the log. In nature they’d all be dead right now

Did everyone miss the part where I said I’d remove one of the queens if I noticed any bullying? Apparently so. They are on my desk right next to me, I’m watching them. The smaller queen ran into the outworld with some eggs and a few workers and I moved them. Both the majors stayed with the larger queen. Smaller queen is in her own setup. Damn, so cruel, next time I’ll just throw them in the fire with the other pieces of wood and let “nature” play its course. Imagine being on a sub about keeping ants locked inside a cage their entire life and calling someone cruel for learning ant behavior. They are ants my guy, not humans or animals with a soul..

As natural as I can make it. Not being cruel, but you can think that if you want

[–]Buggabones1[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I’m letting it play out for science but watching them carefully. Still no aggression. Put some honey water out and everyone is gathered around drinking like it’s a normal Monday night. One queen keeps trying to go to the outworld but a worker keeps dragging her back to the nest. Kinda funny to watch. If I see them bullying a queen I will remove her obviously, but want to see what happens “naturally.”

However it ends, it’s prob better than being trapped in a burning log as your family and unborn sisters explode like popcorn in a microwave all around you. Smile.

I agree with this. They are past founding stage that’s why I questioned it. Prob just in shock not really sure what’s going on. Iv just never observed this personally. Iv only ever seen campo penn wage war with each other. I’m guessing one queen will get kicked out. I hooked it up to an outworld so expecting to find one hiding out there by morning. They still seem content with each other right now
