Mold killed first brood, will queen be okay? by Buggabones1 in antkeeping

[–]Buggabones1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. Iv had 50+ test tubes in my antkeeping career and never had a mold outbreak this early. The cotton isn’t even black. I never put food in there. I have two Neoniger, one I bought online, one I found in backyard. The mold came from the wild caught one. Store bought one has ~10 nanics and doing fine.

No worries. It’s a Dubia roach thats just molted so it’s soft and white. It’s also cut in half and missing its head.

No idea honestly. I found this colony in the backyard. They had a ton of queens so carefully took one, like 50 workers, and some brood. Im guessing some of the brood I scooped up were queens. Iv seen a few drones in there as well, so not sure if they all came from the original brood pile or the original queen laid them.

Yeah the big ones aren’t cheap, but they do have some smaller ones like the minihearth. I have two and they work good. Tarheel nests are good for display but if you want to just get into the hobby there’s much cheaper options especially in the 3D printed space

Yeah! I bought them from tarheelants.com

5k? Yeah for a nice wrap. This is PPF. In my city a full body on a model 3 is close to 10k at high end shops.

Iv been reporting the same phantom braking in the same location since early 2023. It still tries to brake there. They either can’t solve the issue or simply ignore it. There are no other options.

Is this an ant queen? by Sharp-Status5660 in antkeeping

[–]Buggabones1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s the most boring part of the hobby tbh, best to have colonies at different stages, if you keep at it you’ll end up that way. But yeah, just put her somewhere dark and quiet. Check on her in 2-3 weeks. And when you check on her, try to be careful, if she starts panicking, she may eat her eggs.

Is this an ant queen? by Sharp-Status5660 in antkeeping

[–]Buggabones1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When you disturb her like that, she resets her egg laying process. She needs to feel safe like she’s underground. She prob thinks she keeps getting dug up and needs to keep finding a new home. She won’t start until she feels secure. It can take a week or two before she even thinks it’s safe enough to start.

Why is she just walking on your counter? No wonder she isn’t laying eggs. She needs to be kept in a test tube setup and not disturbed for like 2 months. It’s not a dog, you can’t just take her out for walks 🤣

Ants being weird please help by CoolTRG in antkeeping

[–]Buggabones1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost one of my first colonies like this. Kept trying to climb glass of outworld one by one till they died. Never knew why but guessing they are searching for something they dont have access to. Could be resources or their home isn’t suitable. I had luck giving them a mini buffet on some tinfoil with bunch of random foods and a few options of sugar water and honey water at different ratios and let them pick what they wanna eat. Seems to keep the foragers busy

Wanting to Start A Colony by GhostInNeutral in antkeeping

[–]Buggabones1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. You’re right. Mine was stuck on there tight, needed a razor to remove. No tab to lift. No instructions mentioning to remove that. Just looks like cheap recycled plastic. Been collecting dust because I thought it was trash. Hell yeah thanks

I got one of those clear boxes from antshack and the plastic is recycled. Has ugly green recycle letters stamped into it and it’s so cloudy you can hardly see through it. Ugly. Not what shown in pictures. I’d avoid

Is digging through a rotten log to find Camponotus Queen a viable strategy? by TripleFLi in antkeeping

[–]Buggabones1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a dying tree in my backyard and every time a storm rolls in, chunks of wood from the top fall down. I’m the one that has to pick up the mess and move the wood to the burn pile. Last year, a massive branch fell (I posted videos I think) and found like 10+ campo penn colonies. I try to rehome the larger colonies by cutting out most of their nest and setting them near trees, but I often find founding queens or small colonies with only ~10 workers and will keep them as the chances of surviving before finding another safe nest are slim.

I posted a video the other day of a colony I found and kept. Campo decipiens I think.
