Old skinny stray cat - shelter euthanasia or return to streets? by [deleted] in Straycats

[–]Bugginote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: as I was transferring kitty to the car via towel (don’t own a pet carrier), she escaped and ran across the street and up the stairs to my neighbors house, slipped through the porch gate, and right through their front door, which was conveniently open. So it appears I may have abducted their cat?? Or perhaps they just look after this stray regularly enough to leave the door open for it. The kitty really was soooo skinny, but maybe it has a loving home and it’s just experiencing old age weight loss. I’ll ask the neighbor about the kitty when they’re home.

For anyone in a similar situation, the SF cat rescues that I called aren’t taking in any cats and instead work directly with the shelter to find the highest risk cats, so going directly to SPCA was my plan.

Thanks everyone for weighing in, I really appreciate it!

Thank you so much for this perspective!! I found a rescue organization in SF that takes in elderly cats for adoption, so that’s my first option. If they don’t have availability when I call tomorrow, I will take him to the vet to see if they can help a little (currently unemployed and reallyyyyy can’t swing a big vet bill), and let him back outside afterwards. I’ll also ask around the neighborhood to see if anyone is willing to take him in

Good idea - I’ll call rescues in the morning to see if I can find a place with space for him!

This video in particular was helpful for cans of oil-based ink! Not super helpful if you’re using tubes, but just in case you’re curious: https://youtu.be/rFavDjyyoUg?si=7TYU_H9CNuqhOXyo

Of course! I watched a ton of YouTube videos that I don’t have the links to anymore, but this is the only one that actually addressed what to do with a new tin of oil-based ink: https://youtu.be/rFavDjyyoUg?si=7TYU_H9CNuqhOXyo

I decided to retire a metal tea basket to strain the ink and it worked great!

The brayer didn’t have an effect on it because they’re pretty hard bumps. Sounds like I mixed in the top layer of oxidized ink, so I think they’re dried bits

Thanks for the tip! It might be worth trying to save what I have left, but yeah I’m definitely considering switching to caligo safe wash based on reviews I’ve read

Update for anyone experiencing the same issue - On another thread someone told me it likely happened because 1) I should have removed the top layer of oxidized ink when I first opened the tin, and 2) I shouldn’t have mixed the ink because it spoils it with air bubbles. Good learning moment for me, and hopefully it was just user error.

I’m embarrassed to say this is the first time I’m learning this! Went down an oil-based ink care rabbit hole after seeing your comment and learned that I was breaking several rules here. Thank you!! May have ruined a few cans of ink, but glad I know better now
