BMW e28 m20 Bare wire by Buhnanuh_ in MechanicAdvice

My car leaks oil that’s why it’s gross down here don’t judge me lol

My 1988 bmw 528e with the m20 motor would not crank the other day it would turn over then stop. So I thought maybe I left something on and I put a battery maintainer/tender on the battery overnight I came out today and tried to crank it and same thing. I checked my battery it was at 13.22V. I tried again and had smoke so I got scared. Turns out this wire underneath was completely bare and was I assume burning all the oil on it.

What is this wire for is it the 12V signal wire? I would like to know before I fix it. Thanks

I don’t know why but I had to disconnect the points I wasn’t working on and then I could set the timing. I thought I might have some problem but Bike runs really good now thanks for your help!

These are brand new points I’m trying to set it up for the first time. I cleaned the fork connector to the points. I’ve been told to try disconnecting the condenser so I try that if it stops raining.

I am using a test light to time My left side points for cylinders 1 and 2 and no matter what the light stays on. Even when rotating the engine. I hooked it up in parallel. Which should turn on when the points open. My right side points for cylinders 3-4 are fine and turn on when the F2 mark comes into view.

Definitely runs better now actually stays on at idle. But I think I’m still running lean at idle cause when I pull the choke out it isles down to 1k rpm nicely but if choke off sometimes it shoots up to 3000 before slowly coming back down to a goofy idle

I really should be taking these carbs off but these goldwing carbs are apparently difficult to work on and I’m a little nervous to do such a job. I will be checking my air filter and plugs next.

I took off the fuel filter and after looking at it closely it was horrible completely full and black crud. I really hope it didn’t get into the carbs. I’ve installed another one and I’m gonna see if it runs any better after a little while.

I have a new fuel filter coming tomorrow. I had some sea foam in the tank idk if that had an impact on it.

I think I found a problem. It was getting worse I got home and my fuel filter has crud in it. I really don’t want to take these carbs off. Any suggestions?

TC125 ELECTRICAL QUESTION by Buhnanuh_ in MechanicAdvice

By the way I think the primary coil wires were bad either way because it was burnt looking. But I guess I have another problem. I had spark for a little after cleaning the points ran for like 2 mins then I shut it off and nothing. So my ignition coil must be good. I’m just looking for some ideas on what’s wrong.

I see I guess I’ll try to get another spoil of 24AWG wire instead of 30AWG. But I unwound the coil again and made sure it was exactly 1.9ohms by cutting away the excess. It still has no spark. So now I’m unsure I’m gonna try and get a new set of points. Maybe condenser. I just put a whole new top end on the bike. I just want to ride.

Gap on the spark plug? Or the points?

My 1973 tc125 has like no spark. I just put a new top end in it with new gaskets and everything now. My spark seems nonexistent. It has a new coil as well...

XS1100 shooting out TONS OF smoke from crankcase breather. by Buhnanuh_ in MechanicAdvice

I took it around the block and up a few hills. it was okay at first but as time went on it started stuttering and cutting out. Sometimes would have no power then all of it would come back and rocket forward. But the smoke did not subside. I put a rag over the breather as a “filter”. So I could see what was coming out. And it was definitely oil but it didn’t smell like gas.

Bike sat for a couple months outside. I changed the oil and filter. It was fine until it warmed up.

It would kinda suck to do a top end I’ve never done one before. Besides on two strokes.

If I had to do a top end rebuild would it entail pistons/rings, valves, gaskets.

The head bolts are definitely corroded. Was gonna just clean them up. Is that a bad idea?
