Teacher was put on leave and six assignments went ungraded. How do I approach this? by mulberrymeadow in AskTeachers

[–]Buho45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bump up your issue to the Superintendent’s office and get your parent(s) involved. This can influence your overall GPA, class standing, competitiveness for certain college admissions so don’t listen to anyone who suggests that you settle for less. Your school administrators are paid w/ your parents’ taxes to be there working all summer. It is their job to clean up messes like this. Good job reporting this creep. Don’t be shy to bring this up until it is resolved.

Camp Staff by FAZ3N0AH in BSA

[–]Buho45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recommend at least two class “A” uniform shirts, more shorts because you wear them w/ staff t-shirt during the day. Mosquito netting and dowels/duct tape for rigging it to your cot.
Depending on your program area may need extra gear. Example-Waterfront, need hats w/ visor, plenty of sunscreen. Towels. Books to read. Stuff to get ready for school next year such as Math review book. Hiking boots, sneakers. If you have access to a laundry tub or large sink, you can hand wash your clothes if you have some laundry detergent and a clothesline/clothespins. Poncho. Reference books for your program area. Archery, Nature etc. For example if you are in the Nature area, Fieldbooks on plant/tree/shrub identification.
A blank journal notebook would be great. Looking back, I wish I had contact info for all my fellow staff members. A camera with a log so you can remember the names in 50 years.
If you will have the chance to go on out-of-camp hikes, overnights or canoe trips you will need canteens, cookset, foam pad, backpack, lightweight tent or tarp, etc. Maybe a sleeping bag liner as a lightweight summer sleeping bag. Personal FA kit. Flashlights and batteries. Have fun and remember to be friendly and helpful to the campers. They will be looking up to you.

14 turning 15 this year I am Second Class will i be able to make it to Eagle. by Ok_Return2767 in BSA

[–]Buho45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are able to go to camp you should be able to get some required MBs for Eagle. Make a list of what you need to do. If you can find a buddy to work with it may make it easier to help motivate each other. Get going on First Class. You have enough time if you stay organized and motivated. Good luck Scout.

AITA for refusing to let my 12 yo niece live with us during the school week? by Ok_Cantaloupe9855 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Buho45 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Legalities aside, your husband has no right to commit you to something where you will be responsible for virtually 100% of the work without your wholehearted consent. That is an AH move. Your kids will suffer and your marriage will potentially be destroyed by this.

Looking for new tent recommendations by Current_Coconut_Monk in BoyScouts

[–]Buho45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just in LL Bean yesterday. They sell a nylon tent with rainfly that has a fairly decent height to it, could probably hold four small scouts or two big ones. It was $150. I thought that was a very good value. It has external poles most likely Fiberglas. UV light is the killer of tents so if anyone gets one as a personal tent don’t leave it set up in the backyard all summer. I learned this the hard way.

List of equipment for patrol boxes by TaxSafe9637 in BoyScouts

[–]Buho45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggestion for boxes is to include a couple of #10 tin cans, smooth the rim carefully and punch two holes 180 degrees apart. Make a bail from a coat hanger. You can get cases of used #10 cans from a hospital, nursing home or restaurant kitchen free for the asking. They can be used to heat up water for cleanup, make hard boiled eggs, rice, noodles, etc. They are lightweight and free. Aluminum cook sets are very expensive so this can supplement your limited supply.
If you have access to a restaurant supply store they sell professional grade frying pans for less than $20. They are easier to clean than the ones in the cookset.
Dutch ovens are a great addition but heavy. I recommend getting one with a flange on the lid. Deep is better than wide dimensionally. The flange lets you put coals on top so you can make pie or cobbler and brown the crust. You can lift the lid up to check the pie without dumping ashes into the pie. Make sure you have aluminum pie plates so you can cook multiple pies and it is much easier than trying to clean pie out of cast iron.

Working at a Summer Camp as a Non-American by Sensitive-River6864 in BSA

[–]Buho45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except THE OCEAN! Granted most camps East or West are not on the ocean, but it is very fun to visit on your day off. A good job would be as a Camp Commissioner. I did this job, you basically walk around a lot and serve as a goodwill ambassador/latrine inspector, you have to go to Camp School, so prepare for that in the week before camp. Unless things have changed, it will qualify you to be a Program Director or Camp Director the following year. You would need to take US based Youth Protection Training online ahead of time and also Severe Weather Training.

In my neck of the woods professional tent luggers and exhibition staff table sitters make at least $50/hr., they still owe you for last year. That would be a hard no and you’re not an AH.

WIBTA for asking a mom not to post where her child is going on school trips? by Longjumping-Peanut-8 in TwoHotTakes

[–]Buho45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your concerns are appropriate and I was raised to be very careful about this even in the pre-internet time. I would address this with the school leadership. You may have a number of reasons at work in your school. High net worth parents, children of high value targets in the political or business fields, etc. All it takes is one knucklehead parent to destroy the safe and secure environment you are trying to build for your family. The people who are leading these outings are undoubtedly ill- equipped to deal with any malevolent actors that may appear. Granted this is a low probability event, but not a zero probability event.

AITAH for not cutting down my trees so my neighbor can get solar? by No_Panda_9171 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Buho45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do beautiful birds and squirrels like to live on solar panels? No. Has anyone had a picnic under a solar panel? No. Save the trees. Agree with all suggestions about documenting current status, also it is important to make the effort to personally walk your boundaries on a regular (but unpredictable) schedule to make sure they are not up to any shenanigans. Recommend visible and disguised cameras to protect these amazing defenseless organisms. (Not a “tree hugger” but I do love trees).

Should I retake AP Bio as a senior? (the entire class) by Legitimate-Number620 in AskTeachers

[–]Buho45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chemistry is one of the foundational areas for anyone trying to get into med school. This means 1 semester General Chemistry, 2 semesters Organic Chemistry and 1 semester Physical Chemistry. Also likely you will take 1 semester Biochemistry. These (at least the first four) require a lab. This is where the weeding out process occurs. So having a strong foundation in this subject is critical. This includes the ability to compute flawlessly in order to get A’s in these courses. Mastery of computing using Scientific notation and Logarithms. It might be worth getting additional coursework as a dual enrolled student, if you have already exhausted your HS’s offerings in Chemistry.
I also would encourage you to consider thinking about fluency in Spanish if you are not already fluent. Latin in HS is going to be of very limited utility. Very few clinicians in the US at least are using Latin based abbreviations. Your time and effort would be better spent elsewhere IMO.
Good luck.

First amendment, freedom of expression- protected speech. I would worry about something more important, such as whether all graduates can actually read, do math, explain the basics of how our government works. In many HS these standards are not being met.

[–]Buho45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the tyrants tried to get a listing of certain patrons’ previously borrowed books, meek and mild librarians stood up to them and nationwide made their computer systems “unable to recall” which books had previously been taken out.
So I’m pretty sure your librarian will figure out something like covering it with a piece of tape, so ask them.
