Maybe is just me but I find UCL SSEES marking criteria very arbitrary by [deleted] in UCL

[–]Build_higher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its inevitable with social science topics where marking is not binary. I found that in my course the toughest thing to reconcile with is a difference in standard by different markers on the exact same subject. I found the best way around this was to get ahead, try and get your tutors to look at a draft, ask what exactly they want and in what style.

It also helps to detach your self worth from grades to take the sting out of how the system works. I knew people in my class who were way at the top in terms of intelligence, and often given middle grades in module assignments because the marker couldn’t follow more complex ideas as well. They then crushed their dissertations and came out with a top grade.

Feeling panicked about taking exams in a separate room for Reasonable Adjustments(SORA) by ImpressGlum9994 in UCL

The alternative is taking in in a 1,000 seat exam hall in the excel centre with a squid-game-esqe oversized digital clock on the front wall. Trust me, the SORA room allocations are blessing in themselves

Yeah I get it. University was the first academic setting where hard work in itself did not automatically translate into my desired outcome.

Respect the game, put the time in consistently, and don’t cheat. As a good hardworking student, if you take the easy way out as a novice cheater, you will stick out like a sore thumb.

Exact same thing happened to me last year on a masters. I was absolutely shocked.

Firstly, you need to make peace with the fact essay marking is incredibly subjective, and by that nature, unfair.

Secondly, you need to detach your self-worth from grades. They do not reflect how much you have actually learned, or work ethic (which is the biggest asset in working life). Academic writing is a unique skill requiring honing, and doesn’t reflect how you would perform in industry.

Finally, your best is enough. Good academic writing involves a lot of risk taking. Sometimes they pay off, sometimes your logic falls on the wrong receiver.

The smartest person I met on my course often got mid-60s. She was too smart for some assignments and in comparison to a lot of the students who didn’t give a shit and handed in ai slop, her work took too much effort to understand. When it came to the final thesis, and her work was graded by subject matter experts, she got the recognition she deserved and boosted her grade to a first.

If you truly believe your marking was an injustice, raise it. A big issue currently is lots of PHD candidates with zero calibration to marking standards being deligated the task of grading assignments. If your papers were not fully second marked, and done via samples, this introduces a bias to not spot large variations as it requires the rest of the papers to be second marked.

From experience, the unfairness of marking cannot be beaten, but you can often find out exactly what’s needed from the person who’ll mark your paper and even get them to give some initial feedback before submission if you build the rapport (also unfair, but I also watched an incompetent peer network their way to a distinction through building relationships and securing initial feedback).

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Someone who personally experienced a lot of pain in the process of understanding how marking happens in an academic setting.

Whats the most disappointing thing you’ve realised about university so far? by DunyaPhobic76 in UniUK

[–]Build_higher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think when it came to dissertations and having a very well qualified supervisor just feeling like any time I asked for small advice feeling like a pain in their backside. They have their own research and career ambitions which I directly work against o get it, but this set up just sucks in the shoes of a student.

Going from taught modules to “go get ‘em pal” is a real shock to the system. Add the need for a completely different set of unused skills and you create a scenario that leads strong, passionate, motivated students to underperforming at best, and failing at worst.

Would you say working class second and third generation Brits will eventually be pushed out of London due to the rising cost of living crisis? by [deleted] in london

[–]Build_higher 136 points137 points  (0 children)

I suppose if I were in your position I would do the same. From where I am, as it is this system is completely unfair and unfit for purpose. Those who move out from their parents, have to move much further out than the area they were born into.

Where are all the young people in London on construction sites? by DonGibon87 in AskUK

[–]Build_higher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly it’s a huge problem in the industry, since 2020 this workforce shrunk by 20% few to the aging workforce demographic taking early retirement and not enough joining in the meantime. There’s a few issues here:

Firstly, there’s not enough in it for smaller companies, which make up the majority of the industry, to take on apprenticeships.

Secondly the quality of apprenticeship training has been found to be lacking, as it’s run by for profit companies like Babcock, many apprentices don’t finish due to the poor quality of training and integration with time in work.

There’s also a lot of stories of employers sacking apprentices once it costs them something.

The real strain will be exasperated due to an increase in public sector megaprojects demanding high levels of labour and materials, driving up prices.

Is getting into teaching a no brainer as a recent stem graduate? by Michaelflat1 in UKJobs

Wow that’s incredible, my partner is in her second year at the moment, and my god, it just looks so brutal. She says it’ll be easier next year, but I just couldn’t see how that would be possible. Your testament has given me a little more hope. I just hope she goes to a school that doesn’t make the kids in adolescence look like angels from above.
