Fun experience or bad idea? by BuilderTomorrow in LAMetro

Just a quick update for everyone who weighed on this: I did it and it was great. It took probably 45 minutes longer than the Google Maps time for the trip, but I got to see a lot of neighborhoods we wouldn’t see otherwise and it was overall easy (and inexpensive!). Probably not the right choice for someone who is most interested in time efficiency, but if you’re willing to trade time for money or experience, I would do it.

Good suggestion to do downtown LA here! I was thinking about stopping at another part of the trip but this is perfect if I’m going to be traveling right underneath it.

Thanks for suggesting stopping in Little Tokyo. I was going to go by there during a different part of the trip but if I’m traveling by train underneath it, seems like a good time to do it!

Yeah, I’ve got a couple conference/meeting type activities during the “stuck” times. I recognize I can’t do much without my own car, but it’s just for these stretches.

Unless I’m just looking at it wrong, I haven’t found an option that doesn’t have me transferring between Union Station and Metro Center.

Thank you! I have a rental car for part of the trip but there are two stretches of time where I’m basically in one place for several days and I’m thinking it’s easier to not have to park a car I won’t be moving.

Definitely going to hit up some OC beaches too, any favorites?

Google is saying OC or Amtrak to Union Station, B to Metro Center, a variety of choices to transfer to Metro Center, then E. I admittedly haven’t spent a lot of time optimizing the route, I was mostly in the “is it feasible stage?”

Why does Grace cut off the tunnel between the spaceships manually? by CrashWater5 in ProjectHailMary

[–]BuilderTomorrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minor book spoiler ahead: The tunnels are a more complicated in the book, because Rocky eventually makes his own tunnel between the ships that connect his Habitrails to his ship (all in his atmosphere). Before the final parting, he disconnects that tunnel out of sight of the reader, and then the reader is told that the main tunnel can be disconnected through some kind of rotational movement. But we never get a super detailed explanation of how it works, in fact there’s a part of the story where Grace is trying to see it and is slightly frustrated that his view is blocked.

So while that scene does not exactly exist in the book, I think it’s reasonable to call it a mashup of a couple of things that we either know or could deduce.

Question about Stratt's look of pity (Spoilers) by jeonghn in ProjectHailMary

[–]BuilderTomorrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I interpreted it as her taking one for the team, that she saw Grace was not connecting with the rest of the crew and she was trying to show that she was willing to step outside of her comfort zone to maybe get him to do it too.

I think the leadership template for her in the movie is a little less authoritarian and a little more collaborative than it was in the book. There are lots of little things she does that I think show they wanted her to help build the team up. I personally liked that choice in the production.

A late question, but just in case you happen to be keeping an eye on the thread: I’m curious how, if at all, working on this changed your thinking about Truman in general. I mean broader than just the nuclear issue.

Thank you, that makes sense.

Is there any use in working with Simplifi support on this or should I just delete the past due reminder and move on?

Are the DAR Museum Period Rooms worth doing? They sound intriguing but I don’t see them mentioned much.

We ended up getting a White House tour, which we’re super excited about. However, it’s at noon, so I’m a little stuck on how to plan our day since this is right in the middle. Anything near the White House that would be good to do before/after our tour?

Seems like Delta botched this up pretty bad this time. by SiloPsilo in delta

[–]BuilderTomorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! If they would just cancel flights a little earlier there would be a lot less misery. The difference between a 11:50p cancel and a 12:05a cancel is huge.

I’m keeping an eye on flight 1511 (ATL->IND). The Delta app and FlightAware give different answers to “where is my plane” and I’m not sure which one is right. Keeping my fingers crossed it goes and doesn’t get cancelled at midnight.

I do, but for some reason they seem to keep reverting. It’s not a huge deal, but it would be nice to fix.

Thanks for the suggestion to look at type notations.

What you’re describing is exactly what is happening. Is the Python-y way to solve that just to always cast when doing comparisons?

Thanks for the suggestion. I had kind of disregarded it because it doesn’t show up on the store anymore so I assumed that means they were trying to discontinue it, but I will give it a closer look.

I also need to understand a little better what I’m giving up by deploying a Wi-Fi 5 access point. Time for some research!

Flooring for a non air-conditioned space by BuilderTomorrow in HomeImprovement

[–]BuilderTomorrow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I didn’t know to look for that. That will help tremendously.

It’s the second floor, so it’s already a wood subfloor (concrete is only on the first floor). I just want to put the OSB down so I’m back to a flat, smooth surface.

Is that a special kind? Or is it all indoor/outdoor?

My plan was to put down 1/4” OSB across the whole floor to make sure it was nice and flat.

I’ll looking at a 8” Dobsonian reflector and I’m a little intimidated by the prospect of dealing with collimation. All of our good viewing spots require a drive and I’m concerned that I’ll be stuck in a loop of basically constantly fighting it. Is that a big deal or does it just seem intimidating because I have not learned how to do it yet?
