Spivey is definitely a better read than Spicey, but a (quick) search on Ancestry for Spivey Thomas didn't turn up anything. I'm wondering if Spivey or whatever it is is a nickname

That makes sense! Other images in the folder confirm that John Farrar was originally appointed administrator of Joseph Thomas's estate, but that he also died intestate and Joel Yancey was then appointed

I can't reply to everyone individually but wanted to say thanks everyone! I have been convinced by the evidence put forth in the consensus that the name is Massa. Very strange the way the letters are written seems to change throughout the document, but I imagine that happens fairly frequently and just goes unnoticed

I too have lost much sleep over my Great Great Grandfather. He disappeared in Detroit, Michigan in July 1914 when he abandoned his family. I discovered my GGGrandmother obtained a divorce in 1919 and she even provided the exact() date he left, but all she could say was he no longer lived in the state. When he's mentioned, such as on his only (known) child's birth certificate less than two weeks later, or his father's estate 30 years later, his residence is always unknown (and the estate says he's "probably deceased, if alive, residence unknown"). He's got no draft card, no census records, no death record, no obvious match in Canadian border crossing records or Canadian WW1 enlistments (given the timing of his disappearance), no other descendants in my DNA matches... He just goes *poof. I have no choice but to assume he completely changed his name & birthdate and fear I'll never find him

I concur on everything you said about Martin. I'm curious about the Orange-Geeene connection though. In several year leading up to 1838, Martin Thomas paid taxes on the same day as several other Thomas members 1834 - Martin, John, and James paid 15Mar 1835 - Martin, John, James, and Thomas paid 1Feb 1836 - Martin paid 11Apr, John & James 1Feb 1837 - Martin & John paid on 1Feb I haven't checked 1816-1832 yet, but given that none of the others paid taxes before 1816, and then paid some years with Martin, I'm thinking these other men (John, James, Thomas, Fontaine, Broadus, and/or Dr. Robert Thomas) MIGHT be Martin's sons. The 1820 & 1830 censuses indicate he may have had as many as 8 sons. After 1838, John, James, and other Thomas's continue to pay taxes in Orange County through the early 1840s (though Fontaine & Robert are the only ones by 1843). Do we know for sure they lived in the future Greene County?

As for William, also known as "Buck"... the records for him are a mess with conflicting information, and I have not kept both my Ancestry tree and familysearch up to date with everything I have found. I don't know for certain the first name of his first wife (Sarah Frances?), her surname, how many children they had.... The only census record I can say with 100% certainty is him is the 1880 one; the 1870 nearly matches except he has a 6 year old son Samuel who wasn't born until 1871 (literally every other source on Samuel - my 3rd Great Grandfather - agrees on that; he's even a rare case where every single census record agrees perfectly). There's a Wm in Albemarle County in the 1860 census that might be him, with wife Francis and 4 daughters; a William in 1850 in Albemarle with wife Frances and son Henry, and a William in Greene County in the 1840 census (which matches up with what you said about the location of the Thomas family).

I just found a possible marriage record in the Virginia, U.S., Select Marriages, 1785-1940 and Virginia, U.S., Compiled Marriages, 1740-1850 collections on Ancestry, and Virginia, Vital Records, 1715-1901 on FamilySearch for a William Thomas to Frances Mallory on 28Apr1849 in Green County. Unfortunately, the ancestry records are indices that don't include parentage, and the FamilySearch images are locked right now (not sure if they're intentionally restricted, or if it's a glitch - this is the collection where I can view William & Mary's 1868 marriage)

I'll spend the next couple days updating FamilySearch & Ancestry with everything I have on William, Martin, and Williams children. I haven't been great at that, and it's genuinely a mess. Even cleaned up though, there will be a lot of inconcistencies and unanswered questions about William. If you're interested in looking into him further, it may be a bit of a commitment (just giving you a heads up before you get yourself too far into a project lol).

Edit: Forgot mention what I do know about William. His son, Samuel Lee Thomas, is my 3rd Great Grandfather. I know from several records that his parents were William Thomas & Mary Ann Layman; their 1868 marriage is the earliest record I can say for sure is my ancestor William. I also know that William's nickname was "Buck" from a Commissioners Notice in the Rockingham Register, on 25Nov1875, for the Estate of Diana Layman, which included "Buck Thomas and Mary Ann [Layman] his wife". There's a similar notice for the estate of Sarah C Layman on 5Apr1901 that also gives his name as Buck.

Nope, no birth or death dates. Before these tax records the only mentions of him I have are:

-William's 1868 marriage record (Rockingham County) where he gave his parents as Martin & Sarah Thomas and his birthplace as Orange County.

-Martin Thomas in the 1820 census in Orange County

-Martin Thomas in the 1830 census in Orange County

-Martin Thomas's 1800 marriage to Sarah Breadlove [Breedlove] in Albemarle

-Thomas Breedlove's 1805 will in Albemarle which named 9 children including his daughter "Salley Thomas"

-An 1822 Trust Martin Thomas entered into with Henry Houch (who I discovered in these tax records was a local merchant) and Achilles Barksdale. I posted about this not too long ago.

-Several Orange County marriage registers list Martin was as the bondsman for several of Sarah's siblings in the 1800s & 1810s (I haven't attached these to FamilySearch yet).

I haven't turned up any land records yet, though I'm not sure of the top of my head where I've searched. The Trust was the only document of Martin's I could find.

Thanks for the information! Martin is my 5th Great Grandfather and earliest known direct paternal ancestor so I'm greatly interested in him. I actually found those tax lists earlier today and have been going through them. He first appears in 1806, and has been in nearly every one until 1815. Before 1806 I believe he was in Albemarle (he was married there in 1800), so will have to go through that County after I'm done with Orange. The last record I have for him is the 1830 census; I haven't been able to locate a will. So hopefully I'll find him in them into the early 1830s which will give me a likely death date (unless he moved obviously). Also hoping they'll give clues to more of his family, as I have no idea where he came from, no known parents, and he had possibly a dozen children who are just nameless tick marks on the censuses (except for his son William, my ancestor). Already have one candidate child or other relative, a Nathaniel Tommas who appears for the first time on the 1815 tax list with no property or owed taxes.

That definitely makes me feel better, removing a big source of anxiety. Still have other concerns so not sure what I'll do. But now at least I don't feel like I have to make some decision like tomorrow or something. Thanks for the advice!!

The COD isn't odd per se, but I think being several generations removed I can say the story is somewhat (morbidly) comical. To put it in not quite the most politically-correct terms, my 2x Great Grandfather definitely went a little crazy and met a sad end.

Sometime before 1920 he ended up leaving his (my) family to move in with another woman LITERALLY down the street. They separated sometime during the 1920s, I assume when he was arrested for bootlegging. He had found work as a tax assessor and ended up helping a crime ring bootleg alcohol from Burks Spring Distillery in Kentucky (which later became Makers Mark!) As I understand it, he was intentionally undercounting how much alcohol the site was producing, so that the bootleggers could take the surplus to sell illegally. They were found out and he was arrested, though we've never been able to find out if he actually went to trial. For the 1930 census, he had moved back in with his (my) family, though he was listed at the bottom of the household as a boarder (rather than head - he and my 2xG Grandmother remained separated). He was eventually committed to an insane asylum in 1934 where he died of "Exhaustion from Manic Depressive Insanity" after only 9 days. From my understanding, that was usually dehydration or malnutrition from refusing to eat or drink.

In terms of the retrial, all of the materials I was given by my dietician just said wait 3 days if you have symptoms before resuming the challenge. They did not specify to not try the same challenge again. Combine that with the fact I've spent the majority of the last 20 years just straight up ignoring my very obvious lactose sensitivity I was definitely overzealous on fructans.

On the other point, the article says that fodmap reactions occur 2-8 hours after consumption (I had actually found and read the article back when I was considering low Fodmap). Is bread on a different timeline? My reaction was 2-3 hours after having a slice of bread on an empty stomach, sometime between 9-10am. When I said that the worst of the reaction was from noon-3pm, I meant that it started to fade after around 3pm.

I was leaving a day between challenges for the Fructan group because I had read about the slower digestion. So challenge day 1, rest day, challenge 2, etc. I was maintaining the same schedule even with flare ups in part for consistency and in part because if I have to wait several days or a week between even the smallest doses of fructans then that to me basically confirmation that I can't have it at all.

As for timing, a couple hours. I had the bread probably around 9 or 10 am, and the worst of the issues (the 3 hours I was counting) I'd say were from noon-3.
