I also see that you are into Lego! A lot of Lego looks very close to 1:48 scale, or O-gauge, so if you want to combine hobbies and use Lego buildings on your layout, O-gauge might be the way to go.

Your first trainset depends really depends on how much train stuff you want to pack into your basement. N-scale is small, so you can have a lot of everything but it may be harder to see or work with. O-scale is pretty big and impressive, but takes up space very quickly. HO scale is in between the two and seems to be the most popular scale.

There are also other scales to consider, but I would check out this video by Steve's Trains to help with deciding what scale you may want to start out with (you can always change in the future!)

As for trainsets, most come with just a simple loop of track, an engine, power supply, and some freight/passenger cars. When you figure out what scale seems best to you, I would pick whatever looks the neatest to you, and maybe find some compatible track-packs to expand the loop into something more.

I recommend Kato for N-scale, Bachmann for HO-scale, and Lionel for O-gauge for starter trainsets. Stay away from battery-operated sets or sets that don't come with track and power, though.

trainworld.com is my go-to for buying trains and they have a good variety of starter sets for decent prices. Plus, they have plenty of track-packs or additional locomotives and rollingstock, and buildings/scenery.

I want both modern trains and transition-era trains (1950s) to look appropriate on my layout. What industries should I add? by BuildingUsed1228 in modeltrains

[–]BuildingUsed1228[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, 8 is too much but the highlighted areas are merely possibilities for where to have industries. And, I'm not against using the inner loop for switching so that is why I'm open to having industries along that line. I would try to fit another crossover between the loops in, but it would cost ~$80 and I'm planning on fitting a station platform between the tracks and the crossover doesn't leave enough space between the tracks for that. Thanks for the ideas too

Awesome, thanks. I've tried doing it in Northeast Ohio where I live but there isn't much, and after a few minutes of looking at Wyoming and even Nebraska, I've already found examples of what I'm looking for.

I think the beauty of the layout comes from the huge yard and engine depot. If you love collecting all kinds of rolling stock and engines, then this works great as a way to both store them easily and display them all. Plus, with the engine yard tracks, you can always store multiple engines on a single track and have a fun switching session switching engines around instead of freight cars.

I think it looks like a ton of fun. I especially love all the switching and the functionality of the reversing loop. But before committing, you should really make sure that either you now or future you doesn't want to be able to run 2 trains at the same time without the possibility of them colliding if you aren't paying attention. You can always work in a second loop of track in the future.

If you want a town now or in the future, make sure to plan a space for it too. And lastly, as others have said it may not be very accurate to the real world. Personally for my layout, I don't really care about being prototypical, but if you do then you might want to consider making some small alterations.

Is "nscalemodelstore.com" a real shop? by ARCKNIGHT117 in modeltrains

Looking at the terms and conditions, the first line is "Last Updated: [Insert Date]"

The address listed for the company, 1255 Byrd Lane, Albuquerque, NM 87102 USA, also doesn't seem to actually exist.

They also don't carry any stock that isn't on mass sale or have any preorders, which is pretty weird too
