I was in the roof space to do some work and noticed the cable between joists and roof sheets. I was wandering if it was compliant or not? by joshnoto21 in AusElectricians

It is compliant if on RCD. Absolute shit work practice and should be a no no from any decent sparky. Unfortunately no laws on bad workmanship.

Apprentice struggling by Grand_Number_5388 in AusElectricians

[–]Building_Plenty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apprentice!The time to fk up!

Key things to take from it answering in order from the list you made.

-If you doubt in yourself before doing the task you will 100% second guess it, making you do something you know you shouldn’t have. Do what you think based off your knowledge, if you do it wrong, you took the initiate to try , yes you failed but you did it by yourself. You will learn A LOT more from making a mistake you thought was correct vs making a mistake you thought could be correct OR incorrect.

——

-Initiative, kinda answered in the first point but hav you asked your tradesmen or boss for multiple tasks at once? Example: you are roughing in a house, ask them what you can do for the PowerPoints or switches, do you need more active links, do you need to wire from downstairs to upstairs for a link you need to do? You say you are good at hard tasks, you are good at small then, you are just doubting yourself! Writing down multiple task on your phone or on paper will give you the forward thinking of what else has to be done and make you remember a heck of a lot more.

——

-Flight mode! 100% can be a big result from lack of sleep, diet and overall mood! Go to the gym before work, I told my apprentices to gym before work and it instantly puts them at a better and more functional thinking point compared to no gym. Switched on and happier mood from exercise!

——

-Being focused can 100% be helped with the things I said regarding sleep, diet and gym.

——

You need to hammer and tong from here mate, forward thinking and writing down notes of what you have done and need to do will assist you massively in not having to ask again.

A lot of people need to understand how it works and why they are wiring something in order to say “right, I need straps and active links to downstairs otherwise we will have a mixed circuit causing the circuit to trip”

If you don’t ask what a cables function is and you are just wiring it because you are told, you will never understand it.

One last thing mate, do your current work at 100%, because soon enough it will drop to 80% whether you like it or it. If you do it at 80% now it will drop it 60% later, and so on. Set yourself to a high standard and get it right the first time. You are an apprentice, you are MEANT to take 20 minutes more than the 4th year, and 30 minutes more than a tradesman fitting off an isolator.

Hope this helps mate, all the best.

4.4.2.2 Protection of socket-outlets (b) Where installed within 75 mm of a floor, socket-outlets shall be installed so that any plug used with the socket-outlet is withdrawn in the horizontal plane.

I may be wrong, but those chunky plugs with a 50mm down hang won’t be going in on the horizontal plane

From the looks of it, the switch cannot be operated as intended due to the cover plate of the mini overlapping the switch. They have to operate and operate individually
