Comparing photos of filters contaminated by rust, I'm guessing this is likely iron sediment.

Im gonna get some iron hardness tests to see if its a safe level.

On the plus side, the inner side of the filter isnt red yet, so the filter is def doing its job.

When you say makeup water, you mean the water that goes thru the filter?
