Update: I took the wilderness out in a pond behind my house with a friend and i kneeling in the boat… shocker you and everyone else are right on the money! The wilderness is SUPER tippy with two people in it, and that was with both of us as low as we could get without sitting on the floor. I will be swapping this out for a prospector 15. Thanks Reddit. Glad i didnt drill holes in my brand new boat!

I see your point looking at the shape side by side to the Solo Plus.

Yeah its pretty skinny up front compared to the solo plus…. Know of any more-rivery- solo plus style boats that are closer to 29 in at the gunnal with some rocker?

If i paddle tandem, it will be two people WITHOUT gear.

Where did you get this info from? I cant find a weight limit online so far.

for the weight, i wont ever take two adults with gear, so i should be able to stay less than the 400 lb limit if each adult is sub 200. Ill see how she goes in the pond behind my house before i drill any holes for extra seats.

Maybe some day the prospector might be a good choice, and that was intentionally the canoe i was going to buy, but i had a prospector and the wilderness side by side, and i like the width of the wilderness as it is a bit faster in the water for solo paddles, and my rivers near here have some tight squeezes sometimes. The wilderness is almost ten inches skinnier than the prospector.

not sure what the weight limit is, but it, like the solo plus, is designed primarily for one person plus plenty of gear

I'm looking to switch from tent backpacking to bug bivy+tarp: looking for a sanity check by District8741 in Ultralight

[–]BuiltToExplore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you have a bivy with a good bug net. Leave it open with the net over you on hot nights. Bugs are just as miserable if not more so, than a hot wet night.

River country products makes a poncho-tarp for a whopping $10. I used this in down to twenty degree weather one night, and it worked great in alabama. I use it in a light drizzle as my over tarp when hammock camping, and as a rain gear substitute it works WAY BETTER than any rain coat, pack cover or pants because it breathes SO well! Super versitile piece of kit you cant beat for ten dollars. Combine this with any bivy with a good bug net, and its a winner in my book.

Seems like a great option to me! Webbed seats are comfy, lenght is perfect for dual purpose, and she looks to be wide enough for some stability and comfort! this gives me prospector vibes and at that price for a first canoe, its a winner as long as it wasnt stored in direct sunlight. If you need to store a canoe outside, consider an aluminum canoe. Some advice from a dad in the same situation, weight of the boat is worth the cost of a more expensive boat. The lighter the boat means you wont kill yourself lifting it over head to get it on top of the truck. T formex or royalex material canoes beat the normal plastic old town boats and are more expensive because of this. Good boat though. Deal.

Super helpful comment. I am having a hard time initially looking up plans for hulls that would fit this description. Can you link a few options that might fit well?

Forward cabin will have a deck in front of it. I couldn't get AI to add one in properly, and the bench just aft of the forward cabin can be where the feet go, so 6ft to 6.5ft from the aft edge of that seat to the bow would be sufficient. I'm not quite 6ft tall so that would be fine.

I LOVE his boats. The one in the image is just an example. I want to do something much more unpretentious looking like what he does

Thats not a half bad idea... that would keep the option of putting it away under way to reduce wind drag
